In the last five rounds of Premier League fixtures, no team has taken more points than Manchester United. But it does not feel like that.

There are two reasons for that. One is that United’s form in other competitions has been poor.

They were eliminated from the EFL Cup by Newcastle United earlier this month, while a 4-3 defeat by Copenhagen in the Champions League has left them in a vulnerable position as the business end of the group stage approaches.

The other reason is that United have barely played well in recent weeks, even when they have picked up positive results.

In fact, all seven of United’s victories in the Premier League have been by a single-goal margin. Meanwhile each of the teams they have beaten is in the bottom half of the table.

That does not exactly suggest a side destined to finish in the top four. Fifth place may yet bring a Champions League place this term, but Erik ten Hag’s team have work to do to even achieve that modest target.

On the plus side, time is on United’s side. Despite their underwhelming start to the campaign, they are only four points behind Aston Villa in fifth and five adrift of Newcastle in fourth with almost 70 percent of the season remaining.

It is true that Ten Hag’s men have performed below par up to now, but it would be premature to write them off completely.

A convincing victory over Everton would be a welcome statement of intent as the Premier League returns from the November international break.

More likely, though, is that United have to dig deep to collect all three points at Goodison Park this weekend.

Manchester United will be looking to close the gap to the top four when they face Everton on Sunday.

International breaks occasionally bring bad news for Premier League clubs, most commonly involving an injury to a key player.

But Everton were dealt an even heftier blow in the recent pause: last week, it was announced that the Toffees have been deducted 10 points for breaching the league’s financial rules.

It is the harshest punishment in Premier League history, exceeding the nine-point penalty that was handed out to Portsmouth for entering administration in 2010.

Everton have already announced that they will appeal the decision, but for now they find themselves second-bottom of the Premier League with just four points to their name.

The club believes that the commission has imposed a wholly disproportionate and unjust sporting sanction

If we focus only on on-field matters, Everton have made a decent start to the season. But there may well be a hangover effect after the club was suddenly plunged into the relegation zone.

That could benefit Manchester United. The Goodison Park faithful will be fully behind the home team on Sunday, but heads could drop if Everton concede the first goal.

It is worth noting, too, that Sean Dyche’s side have been much better on the road than at home so far in 2023/24. Only Luton Town and Burnley have collected fewer points in front of their own fans.

This is set to be Everton’s final season at Goodison Park before they move to a new stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock.

Goodison creates a fantastic atmosphere and it will be a loss to the Premier League, even though the reasons behind the relocation make sense for Everton.

Before then, Dyche will be desperate to improve his team’s record on familiar turf. However, Everton may well make a sluggish start to this match given everything that has gone on of late.

Manchester United have only scored three goals before the 46th minute this term, so they will not exactly be banging Everton’s door down in the opening period.

With all that in mind, we may have to wait until the second half for the first goal of this encounter.

Marcus Rashford sustained an injury in England’s game against Malta last week, but the forward will be fit for Sunday’s match after it emerged he was substituted as a precaution.

Rashford has endured a tough start to the season, scoring just one goal in 11 Premier League appearances.

As for his attacking colleague Rasmus Højlund, the Denmark international is still searching for his first goal in England’s top flight.

As such, Manchester United will again look to Bruno Fernandes for inspiration in the final third. No one has put the ball in the back of the net for United more often than the Portuguese in the Premier League this season.

Fernandes is a threat from set-pieces as well as open play, so he would be an astute pick to make the net bulge at Goodison Park - particularly at such attractive odds.
