Everton’s Danish Ladies Enjoying the World Cup

Denmark is through to the knockout phase of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The Danish squad, which has a few Everton representatives, is looking to cause an upset Down Under.

Entertaining World Cup

The 2023 Women’s World Cup has been superb so far. England are safely through to the Round of 16 after collecting nine points out of nine in the group stage. The Lionesses remain one of the tournament favourites, while holders United States are also still fancied. For those looking for a bet on football, you can currently get a price of 10/3 for England to win the World Cup. You can also bet on the Women’s World Cup and get odds of 80/1 for Denmark to lift the trophy.

Danes Follow England Through

England stormed to maximum points in Group D, scoring eight times and conceding just once along the way. Sarina Wiegman’s girls weren’t at their best in the opening two games, beating Denmark by a goal to nil after a 1-0 victory over Haiti. However, they were sensational in game three, hammering China 6-1 in Adelaide.

England was always the strong favourite to win the group, with a second place set to be a two-horse race between Denmark and China. The opening fixture between the pair was huge, and Paris Saint-Germain striker Amalie Vangsgaard scored at the death to give Denmark a 1-0 win.

The Danes were narrowly beaten by the Lionesses on matchday two, but a 2-0 victory over Haiti in their final Group D fixture put them safely through to the knockout phase.

Huge Everton Influence

A few Everton players made the Danish squad and have had an impact in the Southern Hemisphere. Katrine Veje has started all three games in defence, and Denmark has kept two clean sheets and conceded just one goal in the finals so far. Nicoline Sorensen has done a fine job on the wing, also. Another key player has been Rikke Sevecke, who recently departed Everton, and has played at least three times in the tournament so far.

Sorensen made the switch to Everton in 2020 and signed a new deal at the club last month. She’s come back from a terrible injury to make Denmark’s World Cup squad and earn a deserved new contract in Walton. Veje signed in 2022 and has made 14 appearances for the Blues.

Can Denmark Win the World Cup

Denmark may be an underdog in the World Cup, but Lars Sondergaard’s ladies have certainly impressed at times in the tournament. They gave England a good game and beat China and Haiti in the group stage.

After finishing runners-up to the English in Group D, Denmark booked their place in the knockouts, where they face Australia in the Round of 16. The Aussies will be backed by ferocious home support in Sydney, and Tony Gustavsson’s side are the clear favourites. Australia are the only team to have beaten Wiegman’s England.

Nevertheless, the Danish team will fancy their chances of getting the better of the host nation, and we should be in for an entertaining game of knockout World Cup football at stunning Stadium Australia.
