The UCI World Road Championships begin in Wollongong on Sunday. The rainbow jersey is awarded to the world champions of cycling. Cadel Evans won the road race in Switzerland in 2009. He will wear the jersey today. He also wears the rainbow rings on his sleeve and collar for the rest of his life. It is the most prestigious jersey in cycling and everyone wants to wear it. Australia has only ever had one road champion. They are all very proud of it and want to keep it for their lifetime. A new world champion takes the honour a year later. Evans will have the stripes on the sleeve today as he will be wearing the same jersey he wore 13 years ago.
