Firstly, I really like the look of Zozimus, who has come tumbling down the handicap of late and is now starting to look particularly well handicapped. David O’Meara’s runner is now 5 lbs below his last winning mark, while his effort when dropped to Class 4 company for only the second time in his career last time out was encouraging.

Over a slightly longer trip at Beverley, the gelding stayed on well for second having looked to be coming with a dangerous run before not quite getting the clearest of runs at a crucial point. That probably has to go down as a missed opportunity as to my eyes, he was the best in the race, but there’s no reason why he cannot go well and potentially make amends here.

At the end of the day, we’re talking about a horse that is well handicapped, has lots of decent form in the book, much of it in better company, and who arrives here in form. 7/1 is potentially lenient and is well worth taking advantage of each-way.

I have similar feelings towards Jumeirah King, who is far from a proven quantity, but he’s unexposed and has shown potential, which leaves me thinking that his current mark of 77 is certainly workable. This horse ran some solid efforts in French maidens without quite getting his nose in front, while he stepped forward on what was a modest British debut to run a solid race over ten furlongs at Ayr last time out.

In that previous race, he looked like the winner for a long way, but possibly found the ten furlongs too taxing, so this drop back down to a mile looks positive. Kevin Ryan is a trainer with a decent record at Haydock, so it would be little surprise if Jumeirah King took another step in the right direction here and got himself involved what is a competitive yet modest and winnable contest.
