Fanatics partners with Hurricanes for betting market access in North Carolina

Raleigh, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes will partner with Fanatics Sportsbook as North Carolina readies for the launch of mobile sports betting next year.

Sports wagering operators, like Fanatics, must have an agreement with select teams, leagues or sports facilities to get a license to accept bets in the state. That provision was added to North Carolina's sports betting law in the state budget, passed several months after the betting law was passed.

Sports Business Journal first reported the Hurricanes' deal with Fanatics. The Hurricanes confirmed the agreement to WRAL, but offered no other details at this time.

Fanatics joins FanDuel (PGA Tour), Bet ESPN (Quail Hollow Club) and bet365 (Charlotte Hornets) in securing an agreement with a qualified sports entity.

The North Carolina Lottery Commission has not yet announced a date for when mobile sports betting will begin, but it will not be before the Feb. 11 Super Bowl.

The commission has until mid-June to launch sports betting.

Fourteen operators have requested an application from the commission. No applications had been submitted as of Wednesday. The commission set a December 27 deadline for applications for operators that want to be eligible to launch on the state's "go-live" date.

The Hurricanes are purchasing Backyard Bistro, a restaurant located near PNC Arena. It will host the team's in-person sportsbook, through the team has not yet released details.
