The first Saturday in May means floppy hats, mint juleps and the Kentucky Derby, an iconic American tradition. Post time is 6:57 p.m. Saturday with 20 horses in the field ready to Run for the Roses.

FanDuel promo code and a $5 bet on another sport.

People are still talking about the 2022 Kentucky Derby won by perhaps the greatest of long shots ever, Rich Strike, who went off at 80-1 odds.

This year’s race is full of thoroughbreds who have already proven their ability to win.

Betting on the Kentucky Derby is an inexact science, of course. It depends on what you might favor. Are you looking for a horse with an accomplished trainer and winning jockey? Do you believe that a horse that has won big races already has the instinct to do the same on Saturday? Do you want a horse that raced a lot as a 2-year-old or may just be growing into his potential?

Or maybe you just believe it’s all luck.

The favorite as of Friday morning was the Todd Pletcher-trained Forte, who has victories in six of seven starts, including the Florida Derby and Breeders Cup Juvenile. He checks off the previous winners box, but may not have the stamina to run a mile-and-a-quarter.

Another Pletcher-trained horse, Tapit Trice, won the Blue Grass Stakes and made a huge comeback to win the Tampa Bay Derby, but those aren’t elite Kentucky Derby tune-ups.

In the category of lightly-run horse with potential, consider Kingsbarns, who won the Louisiana Derby wire-to-wire and has been a winner in all three races he’s entered.

Angel of Empire has the pedigree of champions, from the line of Classic Empire (fourth after a rough run in the 2017 Kentucky Derby) and Pioneer of the Nile (second in the 2009 Kentucky Derby). He won the Arkansas Derby impressively but seems to be a horse with a stalker mentality.

The Kentucky Derby has become a worldwide event in the last 25 years, but none of the foreign-based horses have been able to break through. This year’s international hope is Japan-trained Derma Sotogake, who won the UAE Derby in Dubai.

Looking for an underdog? Look no further than Disarm, trained by Steve Asmussen, who has entered the Derby 24 times and never been in the winner’s circle.

Our pick would be Tapit Trice, with his size and ability. He also should have a cleaner path coming out of the fifth post position than the other favorites.
