Football leagues back in full swing

The beginning of the National Football League (NFL) pre-season normally signals that football (soccer) fans are gearing up for a 10-month football feast, and this year is no different. Yes, the Women's World Cup has been stirring the pot for the past three weeks and Major League Soccer (MLS) is making major headlines following Inter Miami's signing of Lionel Messi, and his remarkable contribution in the inaugural Leagues Cup, but nothing really compares to European club football.

The perennial favourite continues to be the English Premier League and the season kicks off today (August 11), when champions Manchester City travel to newly promoted Burnley, who are coached by former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany.

Along with Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town are also taking their place on the big stage, while Southampton, Leicester and Leeds were relegated at the end of last season. The Champions League winners are looking to win the English top flight for the sixth time in seven seasons, but Arsenal had a great run for the better part of last season and will be looking to go one better this time around. All questions will be answered by May 19, 2024, or maybe before.

LaLiga also gets underway today (Friday, August 11) with Almeria taking on Rayo Vallecano and Sevilla facing Valencia. Champions Barcelona start the defence of their crown on Sunday when they travel to face Getafe, while Real Madrid kicks off tomorrow with a tough-looking trip against Athletic Club.

This season is going to be a toss-up with the many personnel changes that were made in Spain's top two teams (Barcelona and Real Madrid), but JustBet is still offering them with the two top odds to win. May 2024 is a long way away and as they say, "the ball is round, so anything can happen."

Paris Saint-Germain somehow managed to win Ligue 1 last season despite seemingly losing every week for the first two months of 2023. They narrowly won their ninth title in 11 years, just pipping Lens by a single point, and internal turmoil between the team and talisman Kylian Mbappe may put this year's hopes in jeopardy. The league drops from 20 to 18 teams, with Le Havre and Metz being promoted and four teams relegated, and starts today with Lille travelling to Nice, while Paris Saint-Germain welcomes Lorient tomorrow, Saturday.

Bayern Munich's monopoly of the Bundesliga continued last season, but only by a smidgen. Borussia Dortmund somehow managed to lose the title on the last day of the season, thereby allowing Bayern to win their 11th title in a row. The new campaign will start on August 18 with the champions visiting Werder Bremen, but with the scare last season, Bayern's stranglehold on the title may be coming to an end. Let's see.

The Serie A season commences on August 20 and the campaign will see the return of Cagliari, Genoa and Frosinone, while Sampdoria, Spezia and Cremonese were relegated. Napoli ran away with the title last season but, unusual for Europe's top leagues in recent years, Italy has seen four different Serie A winners in the last four seasons. Will this year be any different?
