Former Huddersfield Town left-back Harry Toffolo charged by FA over betting offences

Former Terriers left-back Harry Toffolo has been given a week to respond to being charged with hundreds of breaches of the FA’s betting rules.

The alleged misconduct dates back to before Toffolo arrived at Huddersfield Town in January 2020, wth the period cited by the FA instead taking in his time at Norwich City, including his loans at Swindon Town, Rotherham United, Peterborough United and Scunthorpe United.

An FA statement said: “Nottingham Forest’s Harry Toffolo has been charged with misconduct in relation to our betting rules.

“It’s alleged that the defender breached FA Rule E1(b) 375 times between 22 January 2014 and 18 March 2017. Harry Toffolo has until Wednesday 19 July 2023 to provide his response.”

Toffolo potentially faces a lengthy ban if he has adjudged to have breached the FA’s rules. In another high-profile case, Brentford and England striker Ivan Toney was banned from football for eight months and fined £50,000 in May after admitting 232 breaches of the same rules. That sentence was reduced in light of Toney being diagnosed with a gambling addiction.

Under FA rules, players ‘shall not bet, either directly or indirectly, or instruct [other people to bet]’ on any games, whether or not their team are involved.

Toffolo was at the John Smith's Stadium for two and a half years, with his last appearance for the club coming against his current club in the 2022 Championship play-off final. He made the move to Forest on the same day that Lewis O’Brien made the same move.
