Frankie Dettori has pick of St Leger rides after Arrest states his case at Newbury

Frankie Dettori has two leading candidates for the St Leger at Doncaster. He will trial Gregory at York next week after Arrest passed his in the BetVictor Geoffrey Freer Stakes

Arrest stated his case to become Frankie Dettori's final ride in a British Classic with a strong finish at Newbury.

Flat racing's biggest name led all the way on John and Thady Gosden's resolute galloper in the Group Three BetVictor Geoffrey Freer Stakes.

Dettori drew on the 5-6 favourite's stamina, at a pace none of their six rivals could match, for a length and a half supremacy. Bookmakers reacted by cutting Arrest's odds to a top price of 7-1 for the St Leger on September 16, a race Dettori has won on six occasions.

In his bid to make it seven in the closing months of his career, the 52-year-old is expected to choose between Arrest and stablemate Gregory, a trialist at York next week. "This fella can gallop," said Dettori, who has 23 Classics in this country to his name.

"It was a good confidence booster – Epsom (the Derby) didn't work out, the track was too difficult for him.

“He’s one card for the St Leger, but let’s see how Gregory gets on next Wednesday."

Aidan O'Brien committed to keeping crack juveniles City Of Troy and Henry Longfellow apart for now – after the latter enhanced his glowing reputation at the Curragh.

The Ballydoyle trainer said his 16th Futurity Stakes scorer, at short odds, heads for the Dewhurst on October 14. City Of Troy, ante-post favourite for next year's 2,000 Guineas and Derby, will be kept at home for the National Stakes in September.

Richard Hannon and Sean Levey combined to lift Newbury's BetVictor Hungerford Stakes with powerful finisher Witch Hunter (12-1).
