Frankie Dettori Will Ride Arrest In Saturday's St Leger

Frankie Dettori’s last ever Doncaster St Leger ride will be on the John Gosden-trained Arrest after the popular Italian jockey decided to ditch Gregory in favour of the recent Geoffrey Freer Stakes winner.

Frankie Dettori Turns To Arrest For Final English Classic Ride

Many thought that Frankie Dettori’s 2023 St Leger ride would be on the Royal Ascot winner Gregory, who is owned by Wathnan Racing and trained by John Gosden.

However, the pocket Italian has announced today that he’ll ride another of the three Gosden entries – ARREST, who he partnered to win the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury last month (watch below).

Gosden also has Middle Earth running in the St Leger in a three-pronged attack in the race as he eyes his sixth win in the Doncaster Classic.

The 3 year-old has now won 50% of his 8 career starts, having also bolted-up in the Chester Vase back in May and despite flopping in the Epsom Derby in June (10th), the longer St Leger trip and the expected softer ground at Doncaster on Saturday are expected to suit Arrest much better.

You feel this might have been in Dettori’s mind when making the choice.

Arrest’s form with some form of give in the ground reads an impressive 1-2-1-1.

Frankie’s St Leger pick is also sired by the mighty Frankel, who won all 14 of his career starts, and was also the sire to the 2021 Leger winner Hurricane Lane.

Frankie Has Already Won Two English Classics This Season

This will also be the last ever ride in an English Classic race for Frankie Dettori having announced his retirement at the end of this year.

Dettori has already won 2 of the 5 Classics in England this season, when taking the Epsom Oaks on Soul Sister and the 2000 Guineas on Chaldean – can he add a third with Arrest?

Dettori Has Won The Doncaster St Leger Six Times
