This is pretty much the least expected third-round clash of them all at the 2023 Montreal Open. On the one hand, we have Gael Monfils that is ranked 276 – yet he is in the draw thanks to a protected ranking. On the other, we have Aleksandar Vukic, a guy that already lost in the Canadian Open but found himself in the main draw thanks to the golden ticket of a lucky loser entry. So really, you could argue that both guys are fortunate to be here.

With that said, they’ve still had to produce the goods in the opening two rounds to be in this position. As for my predictions for this match, I’ve got two markets for you below:

Monfils to Win

Having watched the Tsitsipas vs Monfils match yesterday, I was seriously impressed with the way that the Frenchman played. He was steady on the backhand, solid on serve, and his forehand was simply massive at times. For that reason, he definitely has the capability to beat Vukic in this match.

Monfils -2.5 Games Handicap

Since I believe that Monfils will win, it makes sense to shoot for a handicap market to pump up the value of this match even more. Simply put, for Monfils to pull through for this market, he must beat Vukic by a handicap of 3 or more games. Even if he secures a single break in each set this market would be a winner – assuming Monfils wins, of course.

Monfils is a veteran of the ATP Tour, yet he’s still got plenty of game in him. He is flying the flag for several legends on the tour who are in their late 30s. And to be honest, he plays with a certain carefree attitude these days, hence the huge tennis he has produced in his last two rounds. 

Aleksandar Vukic Preview

After losing to Diego Schwartzman in the last round of qualifying, Vukic has been given a lifeline. He came into the main draw as a lucky loser, as mentioned above, yet he has since beaten the 14th seed, Borna Coric, followed by Sebastian Korda to reach the third round. So Vukic is obviously playing well, yet I doubt he can take out Monfils.

Monfils vs Vukic Head to Head

Perhaps unsurprisingly, these two guys have never played against each other. That’s right, the head-to-head is at a perfect 0-0. Then again, Monfils is close to 10 years older than Vukic, so they’ve competed at this level at entirely different times.
