Gauff vs Sabalenka Prediction, Odds & Picks

In tennis’s modern era, eight American women have won the US Open women’s singles title. Will Coco Gauff become the ninth? Opportunity awaits her in today’s mouthwatering matchup against Aryna Sabalenka (4:00 pm ET, ESPN).

After Iga Swiatek lost to Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth round, Sabalenka was assured of taking over the top spot in the WTA singles rankings after the US Open. But along with being the new number one, Sabalenka is a win away from winning her second Grand Slam title of the year.

Standing in her way is the 19-year-old Gauff, who is looking to become the third first-time Grand Slam women’s singles champion this year, following Sabalenka’s title at the Australian Open and Marketa Vondrousova’s Wimbledon win.

Also, Gauff is aiming to be the first American woman to win the US Open since Sloane Stephens in 2017.

Based on the odds for the US Open women’s singles final, we could be in for a real thriller at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Who will take home the trophy?

Coco Gauff vs Aryna Sabalenka Prediction and Picks

This time last year, Sabalenka had just suffered an agonizing loss to Swiatek in the US Open semifinals. In the third set, she was up a break and two games away from a momentous win, but she was broken in her final two service games as Swiatek rallied for a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win.

Now, Sabalenka is on the verge of winning two Grand Slam titles in one year, and she has wrestled away the number one ranking from Swiatek, who has held it for 75 straight weeks.

Sabalenka was the only women’s singles player to reach at least the semifinals in each Grand Slam this year, and her comeback win over Madison Keys on Thursday also made her the only women’s singles player to reach multiple Grand Slam finals this year.

Her rally against Keys showcased the fortitude that has helped her reach the level that she has over the last year. Keys was up 6-0, 5-4 and serving for the match, but Sabalenka broke her to stay alive, won the second set in a tiebreak, then overcame being down a break in the third to win 0-6, 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (10-5).

Results for Aryna Sabalenka at the 2023 US Open

  • 1st Round: defeated Maryna Zanevska 6-3, 6-2
  • 2nd Round: defeated Jodie Burrage 6-3, 6-2
  • 3rd Round: defeated Clara Bu10-5rel 6-1, 6-1
  • 4th Round: defeated #13 Daria Kasatkina 6-1, 6-3
  • QF: defeated #23 Qinwen Zheng 6-1, 6-4
  • SF: defeated #17 Madison Keys 0-6, 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (10-5)

Another display of fortitude may be required against Gauff, who has also had a memorable 2023 and staged her own impressive turnaround to position herself for a Grand Slam breakthrough.

Gauff was a two-time WTA title winner a couple of months after turning 17, and it seemed like her first Grand Slam title win was only a matter of time.

Then she went over a year and a half without a title before winning the Auckland Classic in January. She has since added two more titles (in Washington D.C. and Cincinnati last month), and after falling to fellow Americ.an Sofia Kenin in the first round at Wimbledon, Gauff is 17-1.

Results for Coco Gauff at the 2023 US Open

  • 1st Round: defeated Laura Siegemund 3-6, 6-2, 6-4
  • 2nd Round: defeated Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 6-2
  • 3rd Round: defeated #32 Elise Mertens 3-6, 6-3, 6-0
  • 4th Round: defeated Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 3-6, 6-1
  • QF: defeated #20 Jelena Ostapenko 6-0, 6-2
  • SF: defeated #10 Karolina Muchova 6-4, 7-5

In the most recent head-to-head meeting between Gauff and Sabalenka, Sabalenka came out on top, defeating Gauff 6-4, 6-0 in the quarterfinals at Indian Wells in March.

However, Gauff has a 3-2 edge overall, and I like her chances to add to that advantage and pick up the biggest win of her career.

Sabalenka’s ascent since last year’s US Open heartbreak has been extremely impressive, without a doubt.

The talent and potential were always there, but she has finally unlocked it. And in her run to the US Open final, that first set against Keys is the only set she has dropped.

But just like the Australian Open was the moment for her, this will be the moment for Gauff. The pressure and attention from hitting the spotlight at 15 adversely affected her for a while, but time brings growth and wisdom, and the steps she has taken will help propel her to her first Grand Slam title.

Prediction: Gauff to win

Picks: Gauff ML (+105 at Bovada) & Gauff +1 (-115 at Bovada)
