Georgia, Alabama among betting favorites for 2024-25 CFP national championship

The No. 1 Michigan Wolverines finished the season 15-0 and are College Football Playoff national champions after defeated No. 2 Washington 34-13.

As confetti fell on Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines at Houston’s NRG Stadium on Monday night, BetMGM posted the 2024-25 Futures for the college football national championship winner. Gone will be the four-team playoff format. Enter the 12-team field in which the SEC is well represented.

The SEC welcomes both Texas and Oklahoma to the conference next season, but it is a couple of perennial powers that lead the way.

Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs, who had a 29-game win stream snapped in the SEC Championship game, sits atop the odds at +500, while the team that dethroned the Bulldogs - the Alabama Crimson Tide - is listed at +600.

Here’s the rest of the top-10 favorites:

  1. Georgia +500
  2. Alabama +600
  3. Ohio State +700
  4. Michigan +800
  5. Oregon +900
  6. Texas +1000
  7. Ole Miss +1100
  8. LSU +1600
  9. Clemson +2000
  10. Florida State +2000

Five of the top eight favorites reside in the SEC.

Other SEC schools listed include:

  • Oklahoma +3000
  • Texas A&M +4000
  • Missouri +5000
  • Tennessee +5000
  • Auburn +10000
  • Florida +15000
  • Arkansas +30000
  • South Carolina +30000
  • Mississippi State +50000

If you were to bet $10 on +3000 odds you would receive $300 in profit if the outcome wins. Odds accompanied with a positive sign (+) indicate that this is the underdog and this outcome will have a lower chance of winning compared to a favorite, however underdogs will yield a higher profit if they win.

On Monday night, the Wolverines (15-0) sealed their first national title since 1997 when Blake Corum, who scored the winning touchdown in overtime to beat Alabama in the Rose Bowl semifinal, blasted in from the 1-yard line with 3:37 left to put Michigan up by 21 and set off another rousing rendition of “The Victors.”

After nine seasons coaching his alma mater and in his third consecutive playoff appearance, Harbaugh delivered the title so many expected when he took over a struggling powerhouse in 2015 — despite missing six regular-season games this season while serving separate suspensions.

The Wolverines ran for 303 yards against Washington (14-1), and their defense held Michael Penix Jr. and the Huskies’ prolific passing game to just one touchdown while intercepting the Heisman Trophy runner-up twice.
