In the 2017 World Baseball Classic, Team USA never put together the type of scoring barrage that it takes to hit the inflated Over in Saturday’s opening matchup of the 2023 event. But against a Great Britain pitching staff that could be woefully out-classed by a loaded United States lineup, could we see some fireworks in Phoenix?

Team USA is expected to send Adam Wainwright to the mound. The longtime St. Louis Cardinals ace dealt with a decline in his velocity during spring training outings, which could be something to watch for in Saturday night’s game.

The British lineup is not nearly as formidable as what Wainwright sees in a standard MLB matchup, but if his mechanics are compromised, we could watch Great Britain scratch across a couple of runs against the veteran.

Most of the scoring, though, should come from the loaded United States lineup against a weaker British pitching staff. Reliever Ian Gibaut is the only Great Britain pitcher who spent time in MLB in 2022. Team USA, meanwhile, has MLB All-Stars at nearly every spot in the batting order. 

Although Team USA maxed out at eight runs scored in any pool game back in the 2017 WBC, the scoring output could exceed that against the projected weakest roster in the pool. If the United States scores 10 runs--not an unreasonable expectation in such a mismatch--the Over has a strong chance to hit Saturday night.

If the line moves beyond 13.5 runs, it becomes a strain to reasonably expect the value to remain on the Over. Motivation to continue blowing out an inferior team in the tournament opener could become a factor at a certain point, so we don't advocate for this wager beyond the current total of 13.5 runs.
