PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug 17, 2023--

GSK plc (LSE/NYSE: GSK) today announced that AREXVY (Respiratory Syncytial Virus Vaccine, Adjuvanted) is now available in the US at all major retail pharmacies. In June, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended that persons 60 years of age and older may receive a single dose of RSV vaccine, using shared clinical decision making. Shared clinical decision making empowers patients, in consultation with their healthcare providers, to decide whether RSV vaccination is appropriate for them. AREXVY is indicated for the prevention of RSV-lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) in individuals aged 60 years and older.

An estimated 8.1 million moviegoers bought $3 tickets on Saturday, Sept. 3, making it the highest attended day of the year in cinemas.

A decade after a sarin gas attack killed hundreds and left thousands hurt in a Syrian suburb near the capital of Damascus, survivors say there has been no accountability for that attack or for other atrocities committed during the country's brutal conflict. Syrian President Bashar Assad's government — though accused by the United Nations of repeated chemical weapons attacks on Syrian civilians — has been able to break out of its political isolation over the past year. Assad was welcomed back to the Arab League after it suspended Syria’s membership in 2011, following a crackdown on anti-government protests.

Bahamas has never sent its men’s basketball team to the Olympics. The island nation is one step closer to changing that. Eric Gordon scored 27 points, Buddy Hield added 17 and Bahamas stunned Argentina 82-75 to win one of the five Olympic pre-qualifying tournaments that were wrapping up around the world Sunday. The win sends Bahamas into another Olympic qualifying tournament in July 2024, one that will bring with it a chance to qualify for next summer’s Paris Games. Other pre-qualifying tournament winners Sunday included Cameroon, Bahrain, Croatia and Poland.

The man who leads the Spanish soccer federation took some unwanted attention away from the celebrating players moments after Spain won the Women's World Cup. Criticism from the Spanish government and the soccer world rained down on Luis Rubiales for his conduct while reveling in Spain’s 1-0 win over England in Sunday’s final in Australia. Rubiales grabbed his crotch in a victory gesture while standing close to 16-year-old Princess Infanta Sofía. He then kissed Spain player Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the medal and trophy ceremony on the field. Players’ union FIFPRO says the kiss was “deeply lamentable.”

London police say they will take no action on allegations that people associated with one of King Charles III’s charities offered to help a Saudi billionaire secure a knighthood and British citizenship in return for donations. The Metropolitan Police Service began an investigation into the matter after the Times of London reported that a longtime aide to Charles had suggested the then-Prince of Wales would support a Saudi citizen’s request for the honors in return for up to 1.5 million pounds ($2 million) in donations to the charity, The Prince’s Foundation. The department said Monday it reviewed documents provided by the foundation and the newspaper, and consulted with prosecutors before concluding its investigation.

When President Joe Biden has questions about artificial intelligence, one expert he turns to is his science adviser Arati Prabhakar, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Prabhakar is helping to guide the U.S. approach to safeguarding AI technology, relying in part on cooperation from big American tech firms like Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Meta. Prabhakar says the tech giants' voluntary commitments are a start, but that more action is needed. She spoke to The Associated Press earlier this month ahead of a White House-coordinated testing of AI systems at the DefCon hacker conference in Las Vegas.

A new car that costs under $20,000, once an unofficial threshold of affordability, is all but history in the United States. Blame it on automakers abandoning the low-profit small-car business as American consumers increasingly gravitate toward pricier SUVs and trucks. The compact Mitsubishi Mirage has become the last new vehicle with an average selling price under $20,000. And even the Mirage appears on the way out. The trade publication Automotive News has reported that Mitsubishi will stop selling the Mirage by the middle of this decade. Here are the five new vehicles with the lowest average selling prices in the United States, according to Cox Automotive.

Syrian opposition activists say protests have broken out in two government-held provinces in the south amid widespread anger over increasing prices, the crash of the Syrian pound and the dwindling purchasing power of many people in the war-torn country. The rare protests are still limited to the southern province of Sweida and Daraa and are far from government strongholds along the Mediterranean coast, the capital Damascus and the largest cities, including Aleppo and Homs. The protests come a week after Syrian President Bashar Assad issued two decrees doubling public sector wages and pensions, sparking inflation and compounding economic woes for others.

Major wildfires are burning in Greece and on Spain’s Canary Island of Tenerife off the northwest coast of Africa. Hot, dry and windy conditions are hampering the efforts of hundreds of firefighters battling the blazes, two of which have been burning for several days. In Greece, the body of a man was recovered from an area where two villages were being evacuated after a wildfire broke out Monday morning, while a major blaze was burning for the third day in the northeast of the country near the border with Turkey. In Spain's Tenerife, a fire that police said was set deliberately last Tuesday continued to burn out of control.

Germany’s central bank anticipates that the country’s economy, Europe’s biggest, will be more or less stagnant again in the current quarter. German gross domestic product stagnated in the second quarter after declining in both of the two previous quarters as the country struggled with high energy prices, rising borrowing costs and weakness in China, which has been a key trading partner. The International Monetary Fund forecast last month that Germany would be the globe’s only major economy to shrink this year. A monthly report Monday from the Bundesbank, Germany’s central bank, indicated that the picture isn’t about to improve. It wrote that “in the third quarter of 2023, German economic output will probably remain largely unchanged again.”

Thailand’s populist Pheu Thai party says it plans to form a new government with an 11-party coalition that includes two pro-military parties affiliated with outgoing Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha. Parliament is expected to confirm the country’s 30th prime minister on Tuesday after a three-month stalemate following elections in May. Pheu Thai has been heavily criticized by some of its supporters for backtracking on a pre-election pledge not to join hands with pro-military parties. It defended the decision, saying it was necessary to break the political deadlock and seek reconciliation after decades of deep divisions.

A judge is set to sentence Lucy Letby, the most prolific child killer in modern U.K. history, for murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six others while working as a neonatal nurse at a hospital in northern England. Justice James Goss on Monday could level the most severe sentence possible under British law by imposing multiple life terms to ensure that Letby will spend the rest of her life behind bars. Following 22 days of deliberations, a jury at Manchester Crown Court convicted the 33-year-old of killing the babies over a yearlong period that saw her prey on the vulnerabilities of sick newborns and their anxious parents.
