Gujarat polls: Daily wager contesting as independent pays Rs 10,000 deposit to EC in Re 1 coins

Mahendra Patni is contesting the election from the Gandhinagar North seat as an independent candidate. He is a daily wage worker whose slum colony in Gujarat capital Gandhina was razed in 2019 to make way for a hotel. His supporters raised Rs 10,000 in Re 1 coins and deposited it with the Election Commission. The slums were demolished three years ago and their residents were forced to move to a nearby area. They have no water or electricity supply. Pati wants the government to provide permanent space for daily wagers and address their other issues. The current situation has been going on since 1990s.
