Haskell Stakes 2023 Betting Guide For $1 Million Race At Monmouth Park

The 56th running of the $1 millionTVG.com Haskell Stakes is set for Saturday at Monmouth Park, and a trio of win contenders includes Kentucky Derby winner Mage. The 1 1/8 mile “War at the Shore” headlines the biggest day of racing on the Jersey shore and includes four other graded stakes races leading into the Grade 1 Haskell.

Two Grade 1 races Saturday at Monmouth Park are part of FanDuel’s cash back promotion with Race 11 United Nations and Race 12 Haskell offering up to $10 back if your single horse win wager finishes in 2nd or 3rd place.

The Haskell has has been dominated by more favorites in recent years starting with Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in 2015 to the controversial photo finish in 2021 between Mandaloun and Hot Rod Charlie, who was disqualified for interference in the stretch with Midnight Bourbon going down along with his jockey in a nasty spill.

Haskell winners Exaggerator (2017) won at 5/2 odds while Good Magic (2018), Maximum Security (2019) and Authentic (2020) were all less than even money (1/1).

Girvin (2017) pulled the upset at 9/1 odds, and then last year Cyberknife (7/1) streaked home a winner ahead of the two favorites for his connections, who included the owner that lived in Ocean Township for more than 30 years. Cyberknife also won with a track record time of 1:46.24 for the 1/1/8 mile race before a crowd of 22,138.

In 55 running’s of the Haskell, the post time favorite has won the race 27 times.

I’ll turn to the experts at Horse Racing Nation and it’s Super Screener big stakes race analysis for more insight on the Haskell. The updates on all five stakes races will be here on Friday along with added picks. A sunny day with temps in the upper 80’s is in the forecast for Oceanport and Monmouth Park Saturday.

  1. Geaux Rocket Ride (9/2)
  2. Awesome Strong (30/1)
  3. Salute the Stars (8/1)
  4. Mage (3/1)
  5. Tapit Trice (3/1)
  6. Howgreatisnate (20/1)
  7. Extra Anejo (5/1)
  8. Arabian Knight (5/2)

Early insight shows that lightly-raced Arabian Knight looks like the controlling early speed over a track that favors forwardly placed horses. He hasn’t raced since winning the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn in January. The $2.3 million purchase was taken out of training after looking like a leader on the Kentucky Derby trail. He’s 2-for-2 winning by a combined 13-lengths for Hall of Fame controversial trainer Bob Baffert, who has won the Haskell a record nine times and his other five horses finished second.

Check out the packed racing schedule at Monmouth Park on Saturday, as the list of graded stakes offers great betting opportunities. Post time for Race 1 is 12 p.m. ET, and the Haskell Stakes is Race 12 at 5:45 p.m. ET and called by Larry Collmus as part of NBC Sports’ “Road to the Breeders’ Cup” series from 5-6 p.m. ET. The Haskell Stakes will also be streamed on Peacock.
