Horse racing predictions: Southwell and Kempton

Three meetings survive across the UK and Ireland on Tuesday following the abandonment of the National Hunt card at Chepstow, where temperatures fell to -6C overnight.

That leaves us with all-weather Flat action from Kempton (12.40-3.50pm) and Southwell (5.00-8.30), plus a solitary jumps meeting at Clonmel (12.50-4.00), where the course did pass an inspection.

Tuesday’s nap is an Andrew Balding-trained four-year-old who can claim a first career win and continue a flying start to the new year for the stable.

A field of five contest this novice stakes over 1m 4f and preference here is for BERKSHIRE BREEZE on his Tapeta debut for trainer Andrew Balding.

The four-year-old has yet to score but has produced some fine efforts against high-ranking opposition and finished second at Chepstow and Ascot last summer. On his most recent outing he was seventh in a competitive contest at Ascot on Shergar Cup day in August.

If Berkshire Breeze can produce a performance anywhere near his best, then his chances of claiming the spoils here and continuing what has been a fine start to the year for the Balding stable look high. The Kingsclere handler already has eight winners and two second places from 20 races in 2023.

There should be some juice in the price of Adrian Keatley’s KIHAVAH for this 1m 4f handicap. The six-year-old gelding by Harbour Watch is a dual-purpose performer who has won on the Flat and over hurdles and makes his first career appearance on the all-weather here.

Kihavah was pulled up at Fakenham on New Year’s Day in a 2m 4f handicap hurdle. That was his first outing since a wind operation but he could play a big role here.

His most recent Flat start came in September in a Class 3 event at Ayr (1m 5f, good). Having travelled wide throughout, he hit the front at the furlong marker but was swamped late on by fast finishers. If he handles this surface, that run suggests he may defy his current unchanged mark of 85.

Horse racing predictions: Kempton 2.10

A look at the form suggests plenty of the 10 runners may struggle in this one-mile handicap, but one that showed up well last time was SANDY PARADISE, who was fourth over course and distance this month on his first start for new trainer Richard Hughes.

He had to race wide in that outing and weakened inside the final furlong on what was his first run since September, but he had won over this trip on his only previous visit to Kempton and is entitled to be sharper for that comeback run and stable bow.

He’s only 1lb above his previous winning mark and, given the travails of many of his rivals here, it will be no great surprise if he manages to make it three wins in his previous five on the all-weather.
