Hot and Cold NHL Betting Teams: Moneyline and ATS 1/31/2024

As we enter the final day before the All-Star Break, let us take a look at who has been hot and cold in terms of ATS and puck line. As always, a few league notes before we start and albeit full of negativity. The Rangers lost Filip Chytil for the remainder of the season. And while he hadn’t played much, the Rangers were definitely hopeful he could have impacted the home stretch of the season. In other news, the Flyers have all but certainly lost G Carter Hart this season as he was charged, among four others, in the Canada Juniors investigation. That is a huge blow for this Flyers team down the stretch. Let’s see where the money is being made.

Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.

Moneyline

Hot

Edmonton Oilers 10-0

As we all know, the Edmonton Oilers are on a historic pace right now, winning their last 16 games. Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard have not allowed more than four goals in a game since December 16, while the offense has come alive averaging 3.88 GF/G over the 16-game win streak. The Oilers have allowed just 12 goals over their last 10 games in what has been an otherworldly resurgence. They will come out of the break with a tough matchup on-deck as they travel to Vegas to take on the Golden Knights, so only time will tell if the Oilers can keep the streak alive.

Tampa Bay Lightning 8-2

Eight wins in their last 10 games, the leading points getter in the NHL, and sitting in a guaranteed spot, the Lightning are in a good place right now. The offense has been on fire over their last 10 games as they have averaged 4.4 GF/G, which is way better than their 3.48 GF/G season average. Andrei Vasilevskiy hasn’t been his dominant self. However, if the offense can continue to produce at a high level, the Lightning are in good shape for another deep run this postseason.

Cold

Los Angeles Kings 2-8

Every action is met with an equal opposite reaction. As the Oilers surge, nature must run its course. And as a result, the Kings have gotten ice cold. They have lost 14 of their last 16 games, as the offense has completely fallen off. The Kings have scored more than three goals one time over this abysmal 16-game stretch, while the goaltending has allowed an average of 3.5 GA/G, which is an uncharacteristic mark for a team that ranks 5th in the NHL in GA/G. The Kings have a hold of the top wild card, for now, but the Predators, Blues, and Kraken are right on their heels.

New York Islanders 2-8

The Islanders cold stretch isn’t as bad as the Kings, but their offense has disappeared as well. They have scored more than three goals only once in their last 10 games, and their only two wins came in overtime. Their last win in regulation was back on January 4. The offense, which ranks 24th in GF/G, has continued its woes, as they have mustered just 22 goals in their last 10 games. It will be interesting to see if they add more offensive firepower at the deadline as it is a desperate need for this club if they want to make the playoffs this season.

Against the Spread (Puckline)

Hot

Detroit Red Wings 8-2

The Red Wings have needed this dominant stretch. However, unfortunately, the top half of the Atlantic keeps winning, too. They have gone 9-3 over their last 12 games, and the offense has been doing really well, averaging 3.5 GF/G over this span of games. The key difference-maker is the vast improvement of Alex Lyon. The netminder has allowed just 2.44 GA/G over his nine starts throughout this 10-game stretch, and his backup, James Reimer, allowed just two goals in his lone start, not bad for a unit that ranks 22nd in the NHL allowing 3.22 GA/G. Dylan Larkin, Alex DeBrincat, and Lucas Raymond have formed a nice trio atop the roster, as the three lead the team with over 40 points. Detroit will need to keep up the pace in order to compete with the top of the Atlantic. Overall, the Red Wings have been a good team to back relative to covers, as they have covered in 30 of their 49 games.

Edmonton Oilers 7-3

Not only have they been winning, but they have also been covering as well. The Oilers have been extremely dominant over the last month. And with their goal differential of +20, they have exactly what they need to be able to cover the spread. Overall, the Oilers have covered only 23 of the team’s 45 games this season, but it is worth noting they have gone 13-3 ATS over the course of their win streak.

Cold

Los Angeles Kings and New York Islanders 2-8

Since we have repeats on this list, I will go with the two next coldest teams ATS. However, seeing these two on the list should come as no surprise, as neither team seems to know how to generate offense since the start of the new year. Overall, the Los Angeles Kings have been a good choice to fade, as they have covered in only 19 of their 47 games. The Isles have done a bit better ATS but are still below .500, as they have gone 23-26 ATS this season.

Florida Panthers 3-7

Despite failing to cover in seven of their last 10 games, the Panthers have managed points in eight of their last 10 contests. The struggle ATS can be linked to the number of games that head into extra time. The Panthers have had five of their last 10 games go into overtime or a shootout, and they were favorites in all five games, equaling no cover. The Panthers did have a four-game losing streak in the middle of this stretch and also failed to cover in those games as well, and in that stretch the goaltending allowed more than four goals per game, which is out of the norm for a group that has, on average, allowed just 2.51 GA/G all season. Overall, the Panthers have gone 23-26 ATS this season.

Toronto Maple Leafs 3-7

It should be no surprise to see the Toronto Maple Leafs on this list. They are heading into the All-Star Break on a three-game win streak, with back-to-back victories over the Winnipeg Jets, but they have continued to struggle ATS with yet another cold stretch. Their netminding ranks 21st in GA/G, as they are giving up 3.17 a game and allowed 3.86 GA/G from the start of this 10-game mark (01/09) to their last loss (01/20). Overall, the Toronto Maple Leafs have gone back and forth with the New Jersey Devils as the worst club ATS. Currently they are 31st in the NHL covering in 15 of their 47 games this season.
