How many fillies have won the Preakness Stakes? Secret Oath looks to join exclusive company in 2022

The 2022 Preakness Stakes may not feature Rich Strike, but there are still interesting racehorses to keep an eye on. Secret Oath didn't run in the Kentucky Derby, so she may be unfamiliar to casual fans of horse racing. However, the filly has a chance to make herself part of an exclusive club that hasn't often been joined at the Preaks in recent years.

A filly is a term used in horse racing to describe a young, female horse. In the United States, the cutoff age for a fillie is five years old. When a female fillian reaches adulthood, she is called a mare. The male equivalent of a filling is the colt.

Only six fillies have won the Preakness Stakes in the 147-year history of the race. Swiss Skydiver won in 2020. Rachel Alexandra won it in 2009. The Preaks has been run at 1.3 miles since 1925.  Flocarline and Whimsical won when the distance was 1 mile and 70 yards. Rhine Maiden and Nellie Morse won with the 1 1/8 miles distance.

Secret Oath is the third favorite to win the Preakness Stakes in 2022. She has won five of her eight races and is fresh off a victory at the Kentucky Oaks. Epicenter and Early Voting are the other favorites.
