How To Parlay On FanDuel

Available in 15 states and counting, FanDuel Sportsbook online is undoubtedly one of the pre-eminent internet sportsbooks on the market today.

At all online sportsbooks, you’re able to participate in parlay wagering. However, FanDuel Sportsbook has some unique qualities associated with its parlay betting system.

Here, we will go over what a parlay is, FanDuel’s Same-Game Parlay offering, the parlay builder and a general how-to for everything parlay-related.

What Is a Parlay?

When you head over to FanDuel Sportsbook and make that first wager on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers moneyline, you’ve made a straight bet. The moneyline is simply the price the sportsbook offers on a bet on the outright winner of the game.

For example, the team’s moneyline could be -200, making them a favorite. In American odds, that -200 moneyline means you have to wager $200 to turn a $100 profit.

With a parlay, you’re taking, for example, the Buccaneers moneyline and the Cincinnati Bengals moneyline and placing them on the same ticket. In this scenario, the Bucs and the Bengals are playing separately against their respective opponents.

By doing this, you now need two contests to win for your betslip to result in a win and receive winnings that are even more than if you were to wager on these games separately.

Can You Do Parlays on FanDuel?

Not only can you make parlays at FanDuel Sportsbook, but through different promotions and bonuses offered at the site throughout the year, you may be encouraged to make this type of wager. Sportsbooks have a higher hold percentage on parlays, so they are often incentivized.

The hold is the amount the sportsbook retains from the amount wagered. For example, if a sportsbook takes $100 in bets and $90 is paid out to bettors once the event is over, the book has a hold of $10, or 10%. Sportsbooks win more on parlays.

That said, it’s no secret that, while parlays increase the overall payout potential on your wagers, there is added risk due to all contests on the ticket needing to win.

Using the Buccaneers and Bengals example again, if only one of those teams won while the other lost, the whole ticket would result in a loss.

Still, the payout for a successful parlay cannot be matched by single straight bets on those same contests. Let’s look at the math.

If you bet $100 on this parlay and won, you would receive $194 in winnings.

Now, if you split that $100 and made $50 bets for each of these, here’s what you’d win.

To further illustrate the power of a parlay bet, look at the winnings combined if you did $100 for each bet.

Hint: It’s still less than the parlay.

FanDuel Same-Game Parlay

Until fairly recently, players at online sportsbooks could not create parlays within the same game. However, FanDuel Sportsbook was among the first to offer the Same-Game Parlay bet type.

With this, you can create a parlay as you would before. However, the main difference now is that you could make a two-leg-or-more parlay if, for example, the Buccaneers and Bengals played against one another.

When you find the game you want to wager on, if available, there will be a specific tab for Same-Game Parlay bets. When you open this menu, you will see the assortment of wagers you can choose from and you create parlays with double-digit options on the betslip.

Below is an example from an MLB game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals.

Of course, the above Same-Game Parlay has very low odds of happening, hence the +120144, but building parlays within one game allows bettors to focus on their favorite team and that day’s opponent as opposed to doing additional research.

Same-Game Parlay Plus (SGP+)

The Same-Game Parlay Plus bet type is a newer feature added to FanDuel Sportsbook. With this, you can create two separate Same-Game Parlay bets and combine them into one mega-parlay.

This is lottery-style sports betting, where a small amount wagered can result in life-changing money for some bettors. The odds of winning can be astronomically low.

To do this, you will need to create one Same-Game Parlay, then go to another game and create another. From there, your betslip will give you the option of combining them.

FanDuel Parlay Builder

The online sportsbook is always looking for ways to streamline the process of parlay betting. In addition to Same-Game Parlay bets, FanDuel Sportsbook also has a Parlay Builder tool.

This can be found by clicking on, for example, the MLB link on the homepage and scrolling the menu in the middle of the page. Here, FanDuel Sportsbook lists various options for you to choose from, breaking them down by bet type.

For example, “1st Half Total Runs Parlay Builder”—this tool would then list all available options across all games from that day to choose from. It allows for finding bets for the parlay to be far more accessible than going to a single game, adding it to the ticket, going back to the homepage and doing it again with another game.

The Parlay Builder tool works for live, in-game betting as well.

Why Can’t I Bet The SGP?

When you arrive at the Same-Game Parlay menu, you may see various bets to choose from. Still, there are limitations on what can be put together on the same betslip.

A basic restriction includes betting the moneyline and run line. In baseball betting, the run line is equivalent to the “point spread” in other sports. It is the expected margin of victory or defeat for either team, with a run line provided to offer balanced odds on both sides.

In the case of the moneyline and a run line, these two wagers are based on the outcome of the game and therefore can’t be combined into a single parlay.

By betting on the moneyline, you think that team wins, so you’re unable to “double-dip” a game result. For example, if you bet the Pittsburgh Pirates’ moneyline and their run line, there’s a decent chance the win would correlate with the run line.

Here, FanDuel tells you that those two outcomes can’t be combined into a single wager.

There are other examples of parlays that cannot be bet and below is one we ran into.

However, when we removed the Suwinski wager, Vogelbach’s 2+ Home Runs could be added to the parlay.

As mentioned, when you’re unable to add the wager, FanDuel Sportsbook provides you with a pop-up that reads, “Selections cannot be combined,” and “Some of your selections can’t be combined into a single parlay.” You will have to adjust your bet to see what is allowed.

There’s no tool in place to click on that explains the methodology for not allowing some legs of a parlay, but we know that sportsbooks look to balance their liability (potential losses). The rejection of a parlay leg likely is the result of the book minimizing risk across its ecosystem.

After we did some manual testing, there appears to be a limitation on how many players from each team you can have on one parlay betslip. Nonetheless, that could also be for that particular game or sport (MLB).

Be prepared to alter your plans if necessary, but if you only engage in two, three, or four-leg parlays, you shouldn’t run into situations where the bet can’t be booked.

Can You Cash Out a Parlay on FanDuel?

At FanDuel Sportsbook, you might be able to Cash Out of a parlay wager while you’re ahead or if you’re falling behind. This feature allows you to either take the winnings you have at the moment without risking the entire ticket or cut your losses and get back a portion of the original wager.

Once a bet is cashed out it can’t be reversed.

If your bet is eligible for Cash Out, you will be offered a “Cash Out Value”. This value will be clearly displayed on your betslip within the Active Bets tab.

The sportsbook has the better end of the deal with this feature, but it can be worth it for some bettors looking to minimize their own risk when part of the parlay has been successful.

How Much Can You Win on a Parlay?

A winning parlay can cost quite a bit of money to an online sportsbook like FanDuel. With that in mind, FanDuel limits the maximum wagers for parlays and it scales based on the number of legs.

In terms of winnings, it depends on the odds of the parlay, but there will be a maximum wager amount. Below is a rough example of what we’ve seen reported by the betting public.

Note: The example above is for MLB wagers. The maximum wagers did seem to differ slightly based on the odds of the individual bets.

In some instances, we’ve seen parlay payouts capped at around $1 million.

Why Can’t My Selections Be Combined Into a Parlay?

We discussed why some Same-Game Parlays can’t be bet, and this can happen with traditional parlays as well. There are limitations on the number of players per team on a parlay ticket or correlated wagers. The same principles apply to standard parlays.

However, finding a restriction for a standard parlay is rarer as you’re betting on outcomes from two or more games, possibly from multiple sports.

You Can Make Multi-Sport Parlays

More times than not, yes, you can create multi-sport parlays. This is a parlay in which you could bet on the Pirates moneyline, a golfer to win a tournament and a darts tournament winner.

Like all parlays, the entire wager is graded as a loss if any of the legs lose.

That said, there could be some sports that have limitations on parlays. In testing multi-sport parlays, NASCAR appeared to be a sport that was not parlay-friendly.

There’s no clear indication of what is and isn’t multi-sport parlay friendly, so you’ll have to explore. Restrictions can vary based on sportsbook.

Other Popular Types of FanDuel Parlays

Moneyline Parlay

A moneyline parlay is betting on the moneyline of two or more contests on the same ticket. In essence, you’re picking the outright winner in multiple contests.

Point Spread Parlay

Similar to the moneyline parlay, with a point spread parlay, you’re picking multiple teams that you believe will cover the spread in their respective matches.

Over/Under Parlay

Perhaps you don’t have a strong leaning either on the moneyline or spread—this is where totals come in. Here, you will bet on the total amount of points, runs or goals in each contest.

For example, the Pirates and Nationals will go over nine total runs and the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers will also go over nine total runs.

Player Prop Parlay

These are pretty easy to find within the confines of a Same Game Parlay, but player prop parlays allow you to wager on the performance of two or more players from different games.

One example could include the following:

  • Tom Brady has over 295.5 passing yards
  • Josh Allen has over 2.5 passing touchdowns

Futures Parlays

Futures wagers allow you to predict what is yet to come, including championship winners and player awards. With these wagers, you can parlay them together; however, they must fall within the same category as one another.

Below is an example:
