Louisville defensive lineman Ashton Gillotte only knows running back Trevion ‘Trey’ Cooley as a teammate and roommate. He’s played against Cooley during practice with the Cardinals but never as opponents on game day.

That all changes at 7:30 p.m. Friday, when Louisville takes on Georgia Tech at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta to open the 2023 season.

Cooley spent less than two seasons at Louisville, totaling 709 yards and three touchdowns on 145 carries in 19 games before entering the transfer portal last November. He landed at Georgia Tech a month later and is now part of a running back room that lost leader Hassan Hall (another former Cardinal) but returned Dontae Smith, the team’s second-leading rusher in 2022.

The Yellow Jackets are expected to take a ‘by committee’ approach at running back, which gives Gillotte and the returning Cardinals a good chance of having to tackle their former teammate this weekend.

“To me, that’s a cool experience,” Gillotte said. “You go against him in practice, so you kind of know how it’s like to play against him, but I think being able to meet him on the field will be something that I look forward to."

With game day coming soon, here's your guide to Louisville's Week One clash with Georgia Tech.

Louisville vs. Georgia Tech pregame notes

  • Former Louisville defensive tackle Amobi Okoye will serve as the Cardinals’ honorary captain for Friday’s game. Okoye became the youngest NCAA college football player at 16 years old in 2003 before eventually becoming Louisville’s second-highest NFL Draft pick, taken 10th overall in 2007 by the Houston Texans.
  • Louisville is beginning its 10 season in the ACC and will open the season against a conference foe for the second consecutive year. The Cardinals are 4-5 in ACC openers and 29-29 all-time in conference openers.
  • Louisville and Georgia Tech have only played twice (2018, 2020) with the Yellow Jackets winning both times by a combined 54 points.
