The 49ers are showing why they are favorites to win their division once again. After a big win over the Pittsburgh Steelers to kick off their schedule, San Francisco went toe-to-toe with the Los Angeles Rams this past Sunday. The game started like it was going to be a shootout, but the Niners were able to pull away in the second half, beating the Rams for the ninth straight time in the regular season by a final score of 30-23. While quarterback Brock Purdy has been solid, the rushing attack has been the key to SanFran’s success over their first two games. All three of the 49ers’ touchdowns in Week 2 came on the ground, including Christian McCaffrey, who totaled 116 yards on the ground.
New York is hoping to avoid a sluggish start like they did on the road last Sunday. The Giants trailed the Arizona Cardinals at halftime, 20-0, and were down 21 heading in the third quarter. Yet, the team rallied for three unanswered touchdowns, capped off by a 34-yard field goal from Graham Gano in the dying seconds to give N.Y. a 31-28 win. It has not been a clean start for the Giants, who were embarrassed by the rival Dallas Cowboys in Week 1, but if their offense that showed up in the second half in Glendale can do that for a full 60 minutes, they can still compete for the NFC East crown.
This will be the first meeting between the two teams since the 49ers handled the Giants, 36-9, in September 2020. The two squads have split the 42 all-time matchups with 21 wins apiece.
