Hurricanes vs Stars Prediction, NHL Odds & Picks (Jan. 25)

Two of the NHL’s best teams are set to collide on Wednesday as the Carolina Hurricanes are set to pay a visit to the Dallas Stars at 8:30 p.m. ET. It was only last month when the first Hurricanes vs Stars matchup of the season occurred, resulting in a 5-4 overtime victory for Carolina. Only time will tell if Pete DeBoer’s team can split the season series tonight.

The Hurricanes enter tonight’s contest following back-to-back 5-2 victories over the Minnesota Wild and New York Islanders. Carolina’s 4-0-1 record over the last five games has the team tied with the New Jersey Devils for first place in the Metropolitan Division, meaning a victory tonight would see the Hurricanes take sole possession of the top spot.

Meanwhile, the Stars have also played decently as of late, going 5-2-2 in their last nine games. Having said that, Dallas did fall 3-2 in overtime to the Buffalo Sabres on Monday. If the Stars want to continue holding on to first place in the Central Division, they need a bounce-back performance tonight.

There are a number of betting opportunities in this Hurricanes vs Stars tilt that you won’t want to miss. Here’s a look at FanDuel Sportsbook’s latest odds for the game, as well as a prediction and the best bet to make, courtesy of Betting News.

Hurricanes vs Stars Prediction and Picks

Hurricanes vs Stars Prediction: Stars 4, Hurricanes 3

Hurricanes vs Stars Best Bet: Stars ML (Best Value: -110 at FanDuel) & Over 6 Goals (Best Value: +100 at FanDuel)

There’s at least a decent chance that fans are witnessing a Stanley Cup Finals preview tonight. As it stands, FanDuel Sportsbook has the Hurricanes tied for the second-best Stanley Cup odds (+800), whereas the Stars are ranked No. 7 (+1400).

Both teams are among the best at both ends of the ice, although the Stars do have the statistical edge. As far as offense goes, they average the seventh-most goals in the NHL (3.43) while the Hurricanes rank 13th (3.22).

Meanwhile, on defense, the Stars’ 2.55 goals allowed per game is the second-best mark. The Hurricanes are up there, too, albeit at No. 7 with 2.65 goals against.

The Stars also have the superior power-play unit, converting on 26.2% of opportunities (No. 5). At the same time, the Hurricanes often struggle on the man advantage, made evident by their 18.4% conversion rate.

Carolina’s penalty kill is above average, though, operating at 80.8% (No. 11). Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, the Stars have them beaten as well, coming in at No. 4 with an 83.5% success rate.

Another reason why I like the Stars is because of goaltender Jake Oettinger’s recent play. The 24-year-old netminder is 4-1-2 in his last seven starts, tallying a 1.55 goals-against average (GAA) and .945 save percentage (SV%). He also has two shutouts in his last four appearances with his most recent one taking place on home ice.

Daily Faceoff projects Frederik Anderson as the Hurricanes’ starter. While he’s been solid over his last seven starts (6-1-0, 2.11 GAA, .920 SV%), he hasn’t had much luck against Dallas. In his last five starts against the Stars, Andersen is 1-3-1 with a .864 SV%, finishing four of those outings with a sub-.900 save percentage.

At the end of the day, I trust Oettinger more to make crucial stops than I do Andersen.

While I expect a back-and-forth affair, the Stars have the edge on offense, defense and special teams. The Hurricanes won’t make things easy, but Dallas will come through in the end thanks to players like Jason Robertson, Tyler Seguin and Joe Pavelski.

With the Hurricanes vs Stars moneyline odds nearly being a pick ‘em situation, you can’t go wrong with Dallas at -110 odds.

Furthermore, I recommend backing the over on the 6-goal total. On top of the total going over in four of the last five meetings between these two teams, the Hurricanes and Stars have combined for at least seven goals in three of those matchups.

After the two sides combined for nine just last month, I see more goals than expected being scored tonight.
