Hurricanes vs Islanders NHL Prediction & Pick (3/19): Will Metropolitan Rivals Split Season Series?

It’s the Hurricanes-Islanders regular-season finale tonight and the home team is looking to win the series. After Carolina won the first meeting in November, New York went on to win the next two clashes with matching 5-4 final scores as one victory took place in overtime while the second occurred in regulation.

Needless to say, Rod Brind’Amour’s team is looking for revenge tonight.

The good news for the Hurricanes is that they have a ton of momentum on their side. Not only have they won three consecutive games entering tonight’s contest, but they’ve also won five straight road outings while outscoring those opponents 22-12 on aggregate.

The Islanders have the home-ice advantage tonight, but that might not mean much considering that they’ve dropped five of their last seven games at UBS Arena. If that isn’t bad enough, the Islanders are also 1-10 SU across their last 11 home games against the Hurricanes, which includes losing each of the last three meetings.

The Islanders consistently struggle to defeat the Hurricanes on home ice. 

It’s hard to doubt Carolina when it also boasts the special teams advantage. When it comes to the power play, the Hurricanes rank fourth in the NHL while the Islanders sit 15th and have scored just once on their last 15 PP opportunities.

As for the penalty kill, the Hurricanes rank second and have taken 23 consecutive penalties without allowing a PP goal. Meanwhile, the Islanders rank dead last on the PK, meaning it’s in their best interest to avoid the penalty box tonight.

Carolina has been alternating between its two goaltenders and since Frederik Andersen started the last game, Pytor Kochetkov is likely starting tonight. The Russian netminder has been playing well more often than not lately, backstopping his way to a 1.92 goals-against average, .936 save percentage, and two shutouts across his last 10 starts.

Although Ilya Sorokin is one of the best goalies in the NHL, he hasn’t played up to par at home recently. While he does own a solid 2.58 GAA in his last seven starts at UBS Arena, the Islander puck-stopper only has a .899 SV% during that stretch.

I’m taking the Hurricanes to win at UBS Arena tonight. They’re going to be hungry to make a statement after losing back-to-back meetings with the Islanders, who are struggling to produce results at home. If Carolina can capitalize on New York’s special teams struggles, too, this game might be put out of reach early on.

With that in mind, let’s also back the Over on the 6-goal total. Even though the Under has been more prevalent in their games this season, three of the Hurricanes’ five previous games exceeded six goals with exactly nine being scored in each of the last two. Additionally, six of the Islanders’ last nine games finished with more goals than projected.

Considering how each Hurricanes-Islanders matchup this season exceeded six goals, backing the Over is a no-brainer.

As he continues to gel with his teammates, I can’t help but take Evgeny Kuznetsov to record at least one point for the best Hurricanes vs. Islanders player prop bet.

After somewhat of a slow start to his Hurricanes tenure, Kuznetsov is looking more like his old self lately. He’s tallied at least one point in each of his last three games, amassing a total of four during that stretch. He also gets to play with Andrei Svechnikov and Martin Necas — two great snipers — so it’s easy to see why the 31-year-old appears to be turning back the clock.

With the Islanders allowing four-plus goals in three straight games, I’d be surprised if Kuznetsov doesn’t walk away with at least one point tonight.
