The Cleveland Cavaliers host Central Division rivals the Indiana Pacers on Saturday, October 28th. Both squads won their season openers with the Pacers pounding the Wizards 143-120 while the Cavs hung on to beat the Nets 114-113.

Cleveland is completing a back-to-back set having lost to the Thunder 105-108 on Friday.

Indy will be a League Pass darling this season but the question is whether they can summon a defensive effort in games where they can’t summon offensive outbursts.

Cleveland Cavaliers

This is the first back-to-back game of the season for the Cavs who hosted the Thunder on Friday and already are dealing with injuries to the roster with starters Jarrett Allen and Darius Garland both questionable as they deal with ailments.

Coby Altman elected to stick with constancy this offseason given the youthful talented core as the only key departure was Cedi Osman. Perimeter scoring seemed to be the emphasis for the GM who added Max Strus and Georges Niang to the lineup.

Cavaliers Stats

Cleveland played four preseason games posting a record of 1-3. Last season they finished ranking eighth offensively (115.5), and first defensively (109.9) with the second-best net differential (+5.6).

Cleveland is expected to be in the mix for a home-court seed, but don’t sleep on the Pacers as a dark horse. Although the Cavs won their opener I’m not convinced they’re a solid top-four seed or that Donovan Mitchell is a lock to stay in Cleveland.

Indy, on the other hand, is going to sneak up on some opponents and if Carlisle can will his players to give enough effort to be in the middle of the pack defensively I think they’ll fight for one of the six top Eastern seeds.

Last season the Pacers were 15-26 on the road but spent the latter part of the season tanking so it’s not necessarily reflective of their full potential. Granted many of those losses occurred with Haliburton out and he’s questionable Saturday.

Still, with Cleveland playing a back-to-back and their injury concerns I’ll take the Pacers in the upset.
