Indy 500 Betting preview

Alex Palou is the man starting from the pole for the 107th Indy 500. The 2021 IndyCar Series champion, who came 2nd in the 500 during that title-winning season, headed what is officially the fastest field in the races illustrious history. He has 5 IndyCar series wins to his name and after finishing 9th here last year, will be looking to win it all knowing he has destiny in his own hands.

Rinus Veekay starts in second place and will be looking to make up for lost time. He crashed out of the race in 2022 despite starting from 3rd position and his first career win came at the Road Course at Indy back in 2021. He’ll have a tough field to fend off, with 9 former winners in the field.

Among those is Marcus Ericsson, who won the race last year. The former F1 star will start the 2023 race from 10th position. He’s not the only former Formula 1 driver in the field, either. Takuma Sato, who became the first Japanese driver to win the Indy 500 back in 2017, and again in 2020, will start in 8th place, while Roman Grosjean will begin the race from 19th position.

As a dark horse for this race, I love Scott McLaughlin at +1200. The former V8 Supercars wonderkid has been on a tear this season and has already won a race, sitting 5th in the standings. He’s yet to crack the Brickyard, but this could be the year.

If you want an even larger longshot, Helio Castroneves starts in P20 and is a four-time winner of the indy 500. He knows what it takes to craft a win around this place and at +4000 odds, he’s always worth a punt.
