Jazz troll Pistons as losing streak approaches historic mark
Even after picking up the win Thursday night, the Jazz kept dunking on the Pistons.
Utah, which sent Detroit to its 25th straight loss with a 119-111 result, used the Pistons’ pregame status as two-point betting favorites to further troll them.
Utah’s social media team used an audio clip from “SpongeBob SquarePants” in a TikTok after the game.
It was further insult to injury for the Pistons, who are now within one loss of tying the NBA’s single-season record after falling to the shorthanded Jazz.
“I want to be careful with my words, because this one hurts more than most of them,” first-year coach Monty Williams said. “A team that played last night got (50) points off turnovers and rebounds. It is unbelievably hard to understand how we can get outworked in those categories.”
The Detroit crowd chanted “Sell the team!” at owner owner Tom Gores and his Platinum Equity firm.
At least one Pistons player is trying to look on the bright side as the NBA’s all-time losing streak of 28 — held by the 76ers over the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons — looms over them.
“We’re not 2-26 bad — no way are we that bad,” said Cade Cunningham, who posted a team-leading 28 points and 10 assists in the latest loss. “I think we can turn this around. We can play a much better brand of basketball.”
Viewers of the fourth quarter, in which the Pistons went 1-for-10 on 3-pointers, may have a hard time believing that.
“We had a chance to win it down the stretch, and we just weren’t solid enough,” Cunningham said. “This is history no one wants to be a part of.”
Detroit can try to end its pursuit Saturday night in Brooklyn against the Nets.
