Jockey Tom Marquand sent to hospital after getting kicked by another horse

Leading jockey Tom Marquand was taken to hospital on Friday after a freak injury suffered when he was kicked by another horse.

Marquand was already aboard his mount Waipiro and heading to the start of the Listed Newmarket Stakes at Newmarket.

But as his horse was walking among two other runners the horse alongside him Forca Timao let out a kick and caught Marquand on his right arm.

ITV reported there was blood on Marquand’s breeches and with the jockey unable to continue Waipiro was declared a non-runner.

Marquand was stood down from all his remaining rides at Newmarket and went to hospital.

Watching the incident being replayed on ITV Racing, presenter Francesca Cumani said: "Oof, yow! You don't really expect that as a jockey."

Punters shared their concern for the 25-year-old Marquand on , saying: "Poor Tom Marquand. Bet that was a massive ouch.."

One said: "Hope injury is not too bad, about time you had a bit of good luck."

Another wrote: "That was a nasty kick to the arm that. Fingers crossed the injury isn't too bad and it's a quick recovery."

Marquand, the husband of Hollie Doyle, was facing a big weekend in Newmarket where he is declared on Charyn in the QIPCO 2,000 Guineas and Stenton Glider in Sunday's 1,000 Guineas.
