John Dunlop, Derby-winning trainer

John Dunlop died at the age of 78. He was a trainer for 50 years and trained more than 3,500 winners. Dun lop was the first British trainer to enjoy the patronage of the powerful Maktoum family from Dubai. He trained 10 British classics, including two Epsom Derbies. His first job was as an assistant trainer at Brockenhurst in the New Forest. After his National Service he did his training with Neville Dent. The Duchess of Norfolk was studying him with her race glasses from the other side of a paddock. She approved his offer of work.
