Kabras Sugar & KCB maintain National Sevens Circuit advantage despite poor outing in Eldoret
Kabras and KCB remain the teams to beat with one leg of the National Sevens Circuit left but Strathmore and Menengai Oilers are hot on their heels.

Kabras Sugar and KCB RFC remain the teams to beat in the National Sevens Circuit despite their below-par performance at the Tisap Sevens in Eldoret at the weekend.

Kabras were forced to settle for a rare sixth place in Eldoret after being eliminated at the quarter-final stage by Mwamba while KCB were beaten by Menengai Oilers before later finishing fifth.

KCB and Kabras met in the fifth-place match where the Bankers won 21-14. It is the first time the two failed to make it to the semi-final this season, having won two legs each before heading to Eldoret.

Following the result, Kabras maintained their two-point lead over KCB as they now occupy the top spot with 92 with their closest challengers on 90, heading into the final leg, the Kabeberi Sevens, where the champions will be declared.

The Eldoret leg has, however, shown that it is not a two-horse race for the National Sevens Circuit title and the leading duo will be wary at Kabeberi after Nondescripts claimed the Tisap tournament trophy against all odds.

Strathmore Leos, who lost 12-7 to Nondies in Sunday’s final, are third on the log on 82 points while National Sevens Circuit defending champions Menengai Oilers are fourth on 71.

Mwamba, who finished third following a 12-7 victory over Oilers, in Eldoret, are fifth on 69 points while Kenya Harlequins slipped down the table to sixth on 66 following their Challenge Cup victory.

The biggest gainers are Nondies who now have 50 points in seventh place having come into the fifth leg with just 28 points.

The Red Lion have won their first sevens main cup since 2002 when they beat Ulinzi to win the Driftwood tournament. It has been years of struggle for Nondies but they showed great form and character to claim a historic win, ending 21 years of title drought.

Focus now to Kabeberi Sevens this weekend where more surprising results might be witnessed.
