Kansas Sports Betting Update 2023: $717M! KC Chiefs & Booming Market

The Chiefs are in the Super Bowl, but before they got there, more than $717 million in wagers occurred in the team’s native state. Usually, big states like New York receive all the praise, but a detailed Kansas sports betting update 2023 tells the story of a smaller, less dense population thriving in the booming industry.

In September, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly cast the ceremonial first legal sports wager in the Sunflower State. No surprise, she bet $15 on the Kansas City Chiefs to win the Super Bowl at +1000 odds. And, what do you know? Now, the governor is one Chiefs victory away from cashing that ticket. Meanwhile, as she clinches onto her historic ticket, her state’s newfound sports betting industry braces for the first Super Bowl where sports betting is legal. Add in the fact that the home team is a finalist, and Kansas is all but guaranteed to make some money from wagers.

The presence of the Chiefs in the most bet-on sporting event in America can’t be overlooked in Kansas. The state had over $718 million in wagering activity through December, according to figures available from the Kansas Lottery. Those wagers resulted in $20.8 million in net revenues for sportsbooks and $2.1 million in taxes for the state.

Kansas allows sports betting through mobile sportsbooks. Currently, six are operating in the state. On the retail side of things, KS has four state-operated casinos. According to lottery figures, the state has eclipsed $180 million in combined handle in the past three months. The vast majority of that wagering activity takes place on mobile platforms.

Kansas Sports Betting Update 2023: $10M in December Revenue

October was Kansas’ biggest month so far in terms of handle, with $189.9 million in betting activity.

That total has fluctuated slightly in the months since, with November generating $186.3 million and December $181.9 million. January figures are not yet available, and February is almost certain to receive a boost with the Chiefs playing the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

December has been the state’s biggest month thus far in terms of revenue. That is thanks to sportsbooks taking in $10.3 millin. And in turn, paying out over $1 million to the state in taxes. Mobile sportsbooks generated $171 million in December handle compared to $10.7 million by retail facilities. Upon research, revenue figures for the month were similarly split.

Mobile Sportsbooks: $9.5 million

Retail Sports Betting Establishments: $787,775

That divide is no surprise, given that states with both mobile and retail sports betting regularly see 90% or more of wagers placed via smartphones and laptops. In the four months of sports betting activity through December, mobile sportsbooks in Kansas saw $685 million in handle and took in $17.8 million in revenue. In comparison, retail sportsbooks brought in $33.6 million with $3 million in revenue.

DraftKings Sportsbook KS Leads the Way

Of the six mobile sportsbooks operating in Kansas, DraftKings Sportsbook KShas easily seen the most business thus far, generating $299 million in handle and $6.8 million in revenue through December.

Meanwhile, FanDuel KSstands a distant second in handle at $191.5 million. FD Kansas has generated the most revenue thus far among in-state operators at $7 million. Elsewhere, BetMGM KS ranked third through December with $101.8 million in betting activity. However, the sportsbook had yet to report net positive revenues, according to the Kansas Lottery.

Lower on the list than in other states was Caesars Sportsbook KS. It saw $34 million in Kansas betting activity through the end of 2022 and reported $1.5 million in revenue.

Finally, there was PointsBet, which attracted $9.7 million in handle through December. However, it did not report net positive revenues in November or December, according to the state, and is showing a zero in the revenue column for the year.

Of the state’s four retail sportsbook, Hollywood Casino in Kansas City — which is adjacent to the Kansas Speedway NASCAR track, and where Allen cast her ceremonial first wager in September— has seen the vast majority of wagering activity. The Barstool-affiliated sportsbook accounted for $26.5 million of the state’s $33.6 million in retail handle through December. That included $2.2 million of $3 million in retail revenue over that span.

And that’s all before the Chiefs kick off in the Feb. 12 Super Bowl, which Americans wagered an estimated $7.6 billion on last year, according to the American Gaming Association.

Check in for another Kansas sports betting update in 2023 once the Super Bowl concludes. Surely, there will be a spike in numbers for Kansas online sportsbooks after a historic end to 2022.
