Pennsylvania Sportsbooks Post $858 Million January Handle

Sports betting activity in Pennsylvania through the best sports betting apps maintained its momentum from the end of 2023 last month, according to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board January report.

While slipping under the $900 million monthly handle mark for the first time in three months, Pennsylvania sports betting apps, combined with the state's retail providers, did see healthy increases in both year-over-year handle and revenue figures.

January also saw the most popular Pennsylvania sports betting site reach a pair of milestones. FanDuel Pennsylvania crossed the lifetime $1-billion revenue mark in the Keystone State and was able to surpass $10 billion in Pennsylvania lifetime handle.

$858.1 million in total sports bets in January

Despite a diminished playoff schedule, NFL betting continued to buoy the Pennsylvania legal sports betting market and betting sites in January. A total of $858.1 million in January bets were accepted by Pennsylvania sportsbooks last month, a 7.3% decline from December's nearly $925.6 million but an 11.1% year-over-year increase  from nearly $772.3 million in January 2023.

As has become customary in the Keystone State market, Pennsylvania sports betting sites were responsible for the overwhelming majority of the overall sports wagering action from the best sportsbooks. 94% of all sports bets in the state came from Pennsylvania's best sports betting apps.

Revenues down slightly month-over-month but spike year-over-year

Pennsylvania sportsbooks, which offer Pennsylvania sportsbook promos, had the second best month ever in terms of revenues in January. In fact, revenue totals came within 0.4% of December's revenue record of $98.098 million.

$97.7 million in gross revenue was reported by the state's gaming commission. That's just 0.4% behind December's record haul, but it does represent a healthy 68.5% year-over-year increase from the just under $58 million reported in January 2023.

Adjusted gross revenue, after promotions and bonuses was $69.9 million. Off of that, $23.8 million in taxes was collected for needy state and local coffers.

The January win rate came in at a healthy 11.4%, up from 10.6% in December.

FanDuel on top

FanDuel was the top performing Pennsylvania sports betting app in January, stretching its streak of $300 million-plus handle months in thee state to five. FanDuel Pennsylvania reported a state-high $373 million in January handle and also topped revenues among Pennsylvania sports betting sites with $55 million.

DraftKings Pennsylvania was next with a $210 million January accepted bets and $24 million in revenue - its second straight month with at least $24 million in profits.

ESPN BET checked in third in the Pennsylvania market in January with $74.9 million in accepted wagers for the month. That represents a reasonable 9.3% mobile market share for ESPN BET in the Keystone State, bettering the target 7% first-year share the company had laid out prior to launch.

BetMGM was fourth with $45.6 million in January bets in the Keystone State, and Ceasars rounded out the Top-5 with $38.1 million.
