Karolina Pliskova vs Magda Linette Odds & Predictions

A year ago, Magda Linette was ranked No. 53 and a second-round loser at the Australian Open, in the middle of a six-month period in which she failed to win back-to-back matches. Karolina Pliskova was ranked No. 5 in the world, but she was at home healing up an injury that occurred in practice during the offseason. It took her out until Indian Wells in March. Pliskova is favored in the Pliskova vs Linette odds on Tuesday.

Fast forward a year and, despite the drop in her ranking that left her barely seeded, the 30-year-old Czech is into the final eight at the Australian Open for the fourth time in 10 visits – but the first time since 2019.

Linette is at No. 45 (in singles and in doubles), and into the first Grand Slam quarterfinal of her career.

Only six previous times has she even reached the third round of a major, in 29 previous attempts. Never even the round of 16 – never mind the final eight.

Upsets Over Kontaveit and Garcia

Linette’s win over No. 16 Anett Kontaveit wasn’t entirely unexpected.

As for her big win over the No. 4 seed, Caroline Garcia, the Frenchwoman (an in-form player coming into 2023 after winning the WTA year-end finals last November), it was a matter of being solid.

Having that first final-eight breakthrough at this stage, Linette said, comes after spending significant time last year and into the offseason focusing on emotional match management.

“It’s very difficult. I’m 31 and I’m just getting it right, so obviously it was one of the toughest things for me. But I’m happy that I have this opportunity, that actually I tapped into something that finally I’m breaking something that … for me was something really difficult to change,” she said after the victory over Garcia.

Conditions Just Fine for Pliskova

With all the complaints about the fluffy tennis balls at the Australian Open (it’s been ever thus since then arrived in 2019, but the noise is especially loud this year), there is a flipside.

For a player like Pliskova, who hits it hard and flat, the balls are actually a secret weapon on her side of the ledger.

So she’s one to be paid attention to in this draw – notably because so many of the top-ranked players are out. At +3500 right now to win the whole tournament in the Australian Open odds, it might be worth a try.

Pliskova vs Linette Match History

These two, just a month apart in age but on very different career journeys,  have a long history.

They never met in the juniors, but they played each other three times in France at the ITF $25K and $50K levels a decade ago.

Linette also had the unfortunate bad luck of meeting Pliskova twice in the first round of the US Open (in 2017 and 2022).

The key for the Polish player is that the last time they met, in the BJK Cup finals at the end of 2022, she won easily.

She’ll hold onto that one – and the near-win at Flushing Meadows last summer.

Pliskova vs Linette Prediction

Pliskova’s strokes are made for the conditions at Melbourne Park this year.

And while she might not have come into the tournament expecting much – even if her draw, in the end, was pretty good – she has to like her chances to go further in the Pliskova vs Linette picks.
