Kentucky Derby 2019: Master Fencer showcases Japanese racing

Master Fencer is the first Japan-bred horse to qualify for the Kentucky Derby. The Japanese handle of horse racing is more than twice the size of the betting here at home. Master Fencers ranked fourth in the Japanese point standings. He was the only one of four horses nominated to the Derby, but connections for three horses declined their invitations. Trainer Kenny McPeek's horse Signalman missed the qualifying points cutoff. The Derby is one the biggest races in America. It's also the most lucrative. $25 billion was wagered at the Japan Racing Association's 10 racetracks last year.
