Kentucky Derby: All others close 4-5, Locked 14-1 in futures pool

The mutuel field of 2-year-olds who were not among 38 horsesindividually listed in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed Thursday as the4-5 favorite in the first of seven pools before America’s biggest race is runMay 4.

According to final figures shown at TwinSpires, $55,782 cameinto the win pool for all other 2-year-old males, or 42 percent of the $132,033.

Locked, the morning-line favorite Friday in the Breeders’Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita, closed as the top individual choice in the KDFW at14-1. Owned by Gary Broad and Aron Wellman and trained by Todd Pletcher, the2-year-old Gun Runner colt most recently won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity atKeeneland.

Dornoch, a Good Magic colt who was a maiden winner lastmonth at Keeneland for trainer Danny Gargan, surprisingly was next at 19-1.Timberlake, a colt by Into Mischief who won the Champagne (G1) for trainer BradCox, closed at 20-1. Timberlake is in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, but Dornochis not.

Another $32,245 went into the exacta pool, where all othersover Locked closed as the favorite. That result would pay $50 for a successful$2 bet.

As it was the past two years, horses trained by Bob Baffertwere not among the individual choices since he continues to serve an indefinitesuspension imposed by Churchill Downs Inc. for Medina Spirit’s failed drug testfrom the 2021 Derby. Any of Baffert’s horses who might be transferred toeligible trainers might show up in subsequent KDFW pools. For the first poolthey were part of the all-others bet.

Caesars Sportsbook of Nevada, which absorbed William Hill, opened its Derby futures Thursday afternoon. Circa Sports in Las Vegas said it expected to have its first Derby futures written and open in December. Both those markets are limited to Nevada.
