Kentucky Derby winner's odds: Mage was considerable underdog to win

The 149th Kentucky Derby saw a dark horse come through for the victory, as Mage and jockey Javier Castellano crossed the finishing line first on Saturday evening.

Mage entered the race at 15-1 to win.

How did Mage win the Kentucky Derby?

Castellano and Mage made a late run in the Kentucky Derby, pushing ahead from the outside to overtake Two Phil’s.

It’s not the first time that a long shot horse has won the Derby, as last year Rich Strike came away with the victory at 80-1 odds.

Of the last five Kentucky Derby winners, four of them have had greater than 12-1 odds. Mandaloun (12-1) won in 2021 and Country House (30-1) took home the crown in 2019.

Bettors who placed a $10 wager on Mage to win the 2023 Kentucky Derby would have come away with $150 in winning on Saturday.
