Leicester City vs Chelsea predictions

Whisper it, but Chelsea may have turned a corner.

For the first time since October, Graham Potter’s side have won back-to-back matches in recent days.

A 1-0 defeat of Leeds United in the Premier League was followed by a 2-0 triumph over Borussia Dortmund in midweek.

The latter victory secured Chelsea’s place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League following a 1-0 loss in the first leg at Signal Iduna Park.

It was by far the Blues’ best performance since the World Cup, as goals from Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz saw them past Dortmund at Stamford Bridge.

With superclubs like Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain having already been eliminated, and Liverpool up against it in their second leg against Real Madrid, Chelsea fans will be daring to dream of a third Champions League crown.

They have certainly not played like European champions for most of the campaign, but their two previous triumphs in 2012 and 2021 looked equally improbable at this stage.

Chelsea’s continued participation in continental competition means their season still has meaning, despite an 11-point deficit to the top four back home.

Potter is not out of the woods yet – he has been largely unconvincing since taking charge at Stamford Bridge – but another win this weekend would help to solidify his position for now.

Chelsea have an excellent opportunity to extend their winning run against Brendan Rodgers’ relegation candidates.

Chelsea to win – Evens (Spreadex)

Chelsea may have beaten Leeds last weekend, but their overall record since the turn of the year leaves a lot to be desired.

Since the first Monday of 2023, only five teams in the Premier League have a worse points-per-game record than the Blues, while only Newcastle United have scored fewer goals.

No one will be getting carried away just yet, then, but there is no doubt that Chelsea delivered a terrific display against Dortmund last time out.

Potter would no doubt argue that it was always going to take a while for his new-look squad to gel.

Chelsea added another six new faces to the ranks in January, so even a manager who had been in the job for a long time would have needed a bit of patience as he tried to bring everything together.

If Chelsea can build on their performance against Dortmund, the pressure will start to ease on Potter. But slipping up on Saturday would lead to yet more questions being asked of his suitability for the role.

That is why this is such an important match for Chelsea, and they will be grateful that the fixture comes as Leicester appear to have gone off the boil again.

After four losses on the bounce in all competitions, this could be another disappointing afternoon for the Foxes.

Under 2.5 goals – 4/5 (Spreadex)

Chelsea may not have scored too often in 2023, but they have not conceded many goals either.

Since January 2, the Blues’ backline has been breached less often than those of Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Manchester United, even if you overlook the latter’s 7-0 shellacking at Anfield last weekend.

In fact, only Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle have shipped fewer goals since the beginning of the year.

Even Chelsea’s double-header against Borussia Dortmund followed the same pattern. After Tuesday’s second leg, each of the Blues’ last nine games in all competitions has featured two goals or fewer.

The goals have also dried up in Leicester’s last few outings. They have lost both of their last two Premier League games 1-0, going down to Arsenal and Southampton.

A new-look defence featuring three of this season’s signings in Harry Souttar, Wout Faes and Victor Kristiansen has at least tightened things up.

But Leicester seem unable to strike the right balance. As soon as they have become more solid at the back, they are suddenly struggling to find the net.

All things considered, this is unlikely to be a high-scoring encounter.

0-0 at half-time – 6/4 (Spreadex)

Wesley Fofana’s header in the 53rd minute was enough to bring Chelsea all three points against Leeds last weekend.

Once again, however, Potter’s team were unable to make a breakthrough in the opening 45 minutes.

Chelsea have scored only one first-half goal in their last nine Premier League matches. They are perennial slow starters under Potter, with plenty of early possession but not much in the way of a goal threat.

In truth, this has been an issue all season long. With 10 goals they are the joint-fourth lowest scorers in the opening period, ahead of only Nottingham Forest, Everton and Southampton.

Yet the Blues have also kept things reasonably tight from minutes one to 45. Their record of 11 goals against in that time is inferior to only Arsenal and Newcastle.

It is therefore no surprise that 0-0 is the most common half-time scoreline in matches involving Chelsea.

Eleven of their 25 Premier League games have been goalless at the interval, including five of the last seven.

Leicester are low on confidence, so they will probably be reasonably happy to keep things tight in the early stages.
