Foxes to start as they mean to go on

Leicester and Coventry could have been playing Premier League football had a result or two gone their way last season, but instead they meet at the King Power Stadium in the Championship on Sunday.

The Foxes were relegated under former boss Dean Smith, with the board subsequently turning to Enzo Maresca to guide them back to the promised land.

The Sky Blues were beaten in the play-off final by Luton Town on penalties, and boss Mark Robins has his work cut out to guide Coventry back into the promotion picture.

Leicester had a season to forget last year, with neither Brendan Rodgers nor Smith able to lead them out of trouble.

Even with the likes of James Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Youri Tielemans at their disposal, they failed to perform collectively and deservedly dropped into the second tier. While all three of those players have moved on, the Foxes have made some additions that should make a difference.

Harry Winks and Conor Coady will offer some experience down the spine of the team, although the latter is on the injured list, while winger Stephy Mavididi joins from Montpellier.

Maresca’s men have only played two pre-season friendlies, so it may take a while to fully gel them together but they still look to have enough quality to triumph on Sunday.

Coventry may well have remained unbeaten in four pre-season games, but they have lost their star player last term, Viktor Gyokeres, to Sporting Lisbon, and will be worse off without him.

Maresca has better options available and home advantage could be crucial – but with Leicester struggling to keep clean sheets last season, do not be surprised to see Coventry find the back of the net.

Vardy can pounce in the second tier

At 36, Jamie Vardy’s best years are most likely behind him, but the former England international still looks more than capable of doing the business at this level.

He has yet to lose the yard of pace that has caused chaos for his opponents over the past decade or so, although he did only score three times in the top flight last season.

Injuries and a lack of minutes did not help, but Vardy should find the second tier much easier, and the tempo should suit him.

The reactions and finishing quality should still be there, and Vardy can get off to a good start at the King Power Stadium.

Coventry to struggle with Leicester’s speed

Both a 2-1 and 3-1 scoreline for Leicester appeal this weekend, with the Foxes holding multiple attacking options, including Vardy, Kelechi Iheanacho and Patson Daka.

Even Timothy Castagne and Ricardo Pereira offer an offensive threat from full back, and across the 90 minutes Leicester should have too much quality for Coventry and pick up the three points.

The Foxes’ dominance should also have an effect in the card market, and the Sky Blues may struggle to live with Leicester’s flair players.

Between them, Kyle McFadzean, Ben Sheaf, Gustavo Hamer and Josh Eccles picked up 36 yellow cards last season, and they are all expected to start Sunday’s encounter.

Their best chance of victory may come by trying to slow Leicester down, but that in itself could lead to more cautions – so over 0.5 looks a solid pick.
