Liverpool vs Arsenal predictions

Crunch time is approaching and Arsenal are still sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table.

An eight-point advantage over Manchester City gives Mikel Arteta’s men a bit of breathing space at the summit of the standings, as the Gunners seek their first title since 2004.

But there is still plenty of football to be played this term and no one in the red and white half of north London is celebrating just yet.

City have played one fewer game than Arsenal. If we presume they will win that rearranged fixture at home to West Ham United, the gap is in effect five points.

What is more, Arsenal must still visit the Etihad Stadium later this month. That gives City the chance to further chip away at the gap between the teams.

Arsenal also have the trickier fixture list. They must still play Chelsea (as do City), Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion – and Sunday’s visit to Merseyside will not be easy either.

This has been a season to forget for Liverpool, who are now outsiders in the race for the top four.

But Jurgen Klopp’s side remain strong at home, with City and Arsenal the only teams in the division with better records in front of their own fans.

Pep Guardiola’s side should beat Southampton the day before this titanic tussle at Anfield, so the pressure will be on Arsenal to respond.

Liverpool vs Arsenal betting tips

Liverpool are struggling for form but that does not mean Sunday’s trip to Anfield will be straightforward for Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals – 20/21 (bet365)

It should not be a surprise that Liverpool have collected more points at Anfield than at opposition stadiums, but the disparity between their home and away record is stark.

Close to 70 percent of the points Liverpool have amassed this term have come on home turf. Remarkably, Klopp’s team have won only three of their 15 away games in 2022/23 – fewer even than last-placed Southampton.

Their latest tough trip was on Tuesday, as the Reds drew 0-0 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. In truth the scoreline flattered the visitors; had their opponents been less profligate in and around the penalty area, Liverpool would have been beaten.

But although they have collected only one point from the last nine available in the Premier League, it is worth remembering that none of the matches in that run were at Anfield.

No team in England’s top flight has lost fewer home games than Liverpool, who have been beaten just once at their own ground.

Arsenal will thus not have everything their own way this weekend. They should be able to take advantage of Liverpool’s shortcomings at the back, but they will have plenty of defending to do themselves.

Indeed, we fancy the attacks to come out on top in this crunch clash on Merseyside.

Liverpool to score last – 21/20 (bet365)

It would only be natural if Arsenal looked the more assured team in the early stages of this encounter.

Arteta’s side will be full of confidence after their 4-1 thrashing of Leeds United last time out.

That victory at the Emirates Stadium means the Premier League leaders have now won seven domestic games on the bounce since a 3-1 loss to Manchester City in the middle of February.

Liverpool could make a nervy start despite the backing of the home fans. The manner in which they were dismantled by City last weekend may still be playing on their minds as they prepare to face another slick, possession-based, attack-minded outfit in Arsenal.

It would be no surprise, then, were the Gunners to draw first blood. They will hope that by doing so they put Liverpool on the back foot and make it difficult for them to find their rhythm.

But while it could take a while for Klopp’s men to get going, they will not submit to defeat without a fight.

Indeed, it is possible to envisage Liverpool coming on strong in the final 20 minutes or so, in search of either an equaliser or a winner.

They have scored the final goal in seven of their last eight Premier League games at home, and could do so again here.

Gabriel Jesus to score anytime – 15/8 (bet365)

When Gabriel Jesus suffered a knee injury in December, Arsenal fans feared the worst.

The Brazil international had been an integral part of their rise to top spot before the World Cup, and his absence for up to four months had the potential to derail their title tilt.

Yet at different times, the likes of Eddie Nketiah, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli stepped up to ensure Arsenal maintained their position in first place.

Jesus is now fit again, announcing his return to the starting XI with a brace in the aforementioned 4-1 thrashing of Leeds.

The former Manchester City man is the type of striker that could cause Liverpool’s shaky backline all manner of problems on Sunday.

Jesus possesses the ability to both drop deep into pockets of space, and sprint in behind what will be a typically high Liverpool line.

It could be worth backing him to add to his tally for the season at Anfield.
