Liverpool vs Real Madrid preview

Liverpool welcome Real Madrid to Anfield in the first leg of their Champions League Last-16 tie.

And they enter the contest with renewed optimism after successive victories and clean sheets against Everton and Newcastle.

Jurgen Klopp's side appear to have turned a corner with Virgil van Dijk back at the heart of the defence, and attacker Cody Gakpo finding his feet.

The pair renew hostilities after their 2021-22 Champions League final, which saw the Spanish side win 1-0 courtesy of Vinicius Junior.

In fact, Carlo Ancelotti's side have the edge over their rivals having won five of the last six meetings since 2014.

Despite a fairly inauspicious campaign, the 14-time Champions League winners can never be discounted -- especially in knockout competition.

Real, who won another Club World Cup title recently, have now won four games on the bounce and fired in an impressive 15 goals during that run.

There are a few injury doubts in this one with Darwin Nunez forced off just before the hour mark against Newcastle with a painful shoulder problem.

Karim Benzema is also a doubt with muscular fatigue, but Ancelotti is expecting the Ballon d'Or winner to feature in the starting XI.

Things have generally improved for Liverpool in recent weeks with Virgil van Dijk, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino now available for Jurgen Klopp.

He is, however, without the services of Luis Diaz, Ibrahima Konate, Thiago Alcantara and Calvin Ramsay.

There are also doubts over forward Darwin Nunez, who is suffering with a shoulder complaint after Saturday's victory over Newcastle.

The Uruguayan will undergo further assessment and a late decision will be made over his availability.

Carlo Ancelotti is without midfield duo Aurelien Tchouameni and Toni Kroos, who didn't train with the squad on Sunday.

Real Madrid are also sweating over the fitness of Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema, who was left out of the squad to face Osasuna with muscular fatigue.
