Long Distance Cup Tips: Frankie Dettori to sparkle in Champions Day opener

Long Distance Cup tips for the opening race on British Champions Day at Ascot and it will see the two star stayers Trueshan and Kyprios line up in what is a fascinating marathon event on Saturday afternoon. Our man Steve Chambers previews the event and takes on the front two in the betting with a value play ridden by a certain Frankie Dettori...

A winner of the last three renewals of this event, Alan King's Trueshan will be bidding for a memorable fourth success in the staying contest and with the rain hammering down at Ascot in the lead-up to the race then conditions will be perfect for the Barbury Castle inmate. Now seven years old, Trueshan appeared to be regressing a little at the start of the season, but he returned to form when winning the Doncaster Cup back in September and followed up with a stunning win in the Prix du Cadran at Longchamp.

Despite being a real mudlark, Trueshan has the capabilities of running poor races and at short odds it's hard to get too excited about a horse that could have his better days behind him, so it's worth taking him on here. The obvious one to back is Aidan O'Brien's former Gold Cup hero Kyprios, who is the current market leader, at the time of writing, and will be looking to kick on from a second placed finish in the Irish St Leger last month.

That run was his seasonal reappearance, where he was well beaten by Eldar Eldarov, but the Ballydoyle raider is sure to improve significantly for that run and on his day is much classier than Trueshan. Having won the 2022 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, Kyprios went on to dominate the staying division winning the Goodwood Cup, Irish St Leger and Prix du Cadran in the same season, but it's unknown whether he has returned the same horse after his time off the track.

There's no doubting that the O'Brien team will have him firing on all cylinders for this event and if he's back to his best then he should win comfortably, but at near odds-on he's worth taking on in a race that could have some each-way appeal.

Beaten a head in last year's renewal by Trueshan, Andrew Balding's Coltrane will be back for another crack at the race and will certainly be one of those popular selections against the two favourites. Runner-up behind Courage Mon Ami in the Gold Cup this season, Coltrane has been a real model of consistency throughout the last few years and he will be one that can capitalise on the leading fancies failing to fire here. However, he's often found one or two too good at the very highest level, so may just have to settle for a silver or bronze medal here.

Riding at his beloved Ascot for the last time on Saturday, iconic jockey Frankie Dettori will be desperate to grab himself a winner during British Champions Day and while the likes of Kinross in the Champions Sprint Stakes and King Of Steel in the Champion Stakes look more likely winners, Dettori could have a lively runner here in the shape of TRAWLERMAN. Third in this event last season, the John & Thady Gosden-trained raider lines up on the back of comfortable wins at Salisbury and Newmarket and will be full of confidence. The son of Golden Horn will be facing the toughest ground he's raced on during his whole career, so that's a little bit of an unknown, but he's in the form of his life and at double-figured odds he looks the obvious each-way play. There's sure to be support for the five-year-old in the lead-up to the race with the 'Frankie Factor' sure to see his mounts go off shorter, but Trawlerman has a genuine chance of upsetting some big names here.

Of the others, Ebor runner-up Sweet William was last seen finishing second to Trueshan in the Doncaster Cup and could be a performer that doesn't reach top class status, while Broome, Stratum and Maxident look out of their depth in this event.
