Oakland played the White Sox over the weekend, winning Friday before a pair of weekend defeats. On Tuesday versus the Angels, the A’s had seven hits and two errors in a 3-1 loss. Cole Irvin put up 6.0 innings in the start with two earned on six hits and two walks.

For the starter job in the Wednesday game, the A’s will go with James Kaprielian. Across 16 starts so far Kaprielian is 2-5 with a 4.50 ERA. In 80.0 innings total he has 40 earned, 68 hits, 35 walks and 53 Ks. 

Over on the Angels’ side, they played a quartet versus the Rangers this past weekend, losing three of those games. On Tuesday, LA scored all three runs in the first four innings on the way to the win. Starter Jose Suarez managed 5.0 clean innings with two walks and five hits. 

Shohei Ohtani will take the mound for the Angels on Wednesday. Over his 17 starts this year Ohtani is 9-6 with a 2.81 ERA. In 99.1 innings total he’s got 31 earned, 78 hits, 23 walks and 145 strikeouts. 

PICK: I’m probably staying with the Angels here, but not going near it. Ohtani is just 1-2 over his last three outings—he’s only pitched badly in one of those, however. Against Atlanta on July 22, Ohtani put up six earned in 6.1 innings during a loss. In the other pair of that most recent trio however, Ohtani has a combined 12.0 innings with three earned on 12 hits and two walks. He’ll be good for six innings or so here as well if all goes according to plan. That should put the Angels in a positive position later in the game.
