Oakland Athletics

The Athletics lost to the Astros 5-1 on Friday and 3-2 in game two. In the Sunday finale Oakland had just four hits in a 2-0 loss. Starting pitcher James Kaprielian managed 5.0 innings with one earned on three hits and four walks.

For the starter job in the Monday game the A’s will send out Kyle Muller. Over his nine starts so far Muller is 1-3 with a 7.71 ERA and 30 Ks in 42.0 innings. Muller is 4-8 with a 6.33 ERA in 21 career games (20 starts).

Seattle Mariners

Over on the Mariners’ side, they lost to the Braves 6-2 on Friday but ended up with a 7-3 victory in the Saturday matchup. In the game three rubber match, Seattle had just three hits in a 3-2 loss. Starter George Kirby put up 7.0 innings with three earned on six hits and a walk.

As starting pitcher Monday, Seattle is going with Luis Castillo. Over nine starts this year Castillo is 2-2 with a 3.31 ERA and 58 Ks in 51.2 innings. He’s 50-57 in his MLB career with a 3.57 ERA in 157 starts overall.

The A’s are 14-40 in their last 54 on grass and 14-43 in their last 57 overall. Oakland is 14-49 in their last 63 in game one of a series.

Meanwhile, the Mariners are 1-5 in their last six Monday games and 5-2 in their last seven versus a lefty starter. Seattle is 11-2 in their last 13 at home versus a lefty starter.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ll probably stay with the Mariners, but the line's too thick to mess with. Muller needs a good outing here on the other side as well. Over his last three games combined, Muller is 1-1 with 16 earned runs in 13.1 innings on 21 hits and six walks. Seattle should have some opportunities early in this opener. On Sunday the Mariners offense really couldn’t get much going at all; seven different batters went hitless. Seattle is going to need a rebound in that regard, but I think they’ve got a good shot at plating some runs.
