Manitoba mare strikes it rich with Kentucky Derby-winning offspring

Rich Strike, a three-year-old colt, won the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. His mother is Gold Strike from Manitoba. Gold strike won two of her three starts at Assiniboia Downs and six at Woodbine Racetrack. She won $565,000 in her nine-race career. She was retired to become a broodmare in 2008. Rich Strike will be born in Kentucky in 2019. Blair Miller trained GoldStrike. He is proud to have trained the mother of a Kentucky derby winner. It's a rare thing to do that in Manitoba, but it's not unheard of.

Rich Strike is taking a break before training for the 147th Preakness Stakes on May 21. The Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stake are the first two races of horse racing's Triple Crown. American Pharoah won the Triple in 2015 and Justify won it in 2018.

Rich Strike's mother, Gold Strike, was trained at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg.
