Marco Negri makes big prediction about Rangers 'very talented' £3.5m signing

Former Rangers striker Marco Negri is backing the £3.5 million summer signing Sam Lammers to prove to the Ibrox supporters that he is a ‘very talented’ forward under Mick Beale. 

Unfortunately for the former Heerenveen, Atalanta and PSV Eindhoven man, the moment most in Scotland will associate him with came midway through the second half during Rangers’ 1-0 Old Firm derby defeat to arch rivals Celtic before the international break. 

Sam Lammers did everything right; dancing around Joe Hart after latching onto a ball into the penalty area. Until the finish, that is, stumbling and shanking into the side netting with the goal at his mercy. 

This, in some ways, summed up how the new season has gone for Mick Beale’s side so far. Plenty of promise, before collapsing at the crucial moment. 

A slow start for Sam Lammers at Rangers

“The best thing for a striker to do when they start out as a big club like Rangers is to score goals,” Negri tells the Daily Record; Lammers hitting the net just once in his first nine appearances.  

“It’s the (best) way to feel that appreciation and confidence coming back at you.

“The perfect medicine for the strikers is if they start scoring goals. So, I hope that happens, especially for the new guys from Serie A; Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers. 

“It’s a different style of football in Italy. They still have to adapt to the style in Scotland, which is very aggressive and super fast intensity. I hope they can do that because I saw both last year. Lammers is very talented and can create lots of opportunities.

“And Dessers is a strong, strong guy that can work hard for the team with the ball and without. They can still be a good addition to the team.” 

‘Very talented’

In nine games across all competitions, Beale has sent out eight different frontlines; Dessers, Lammers, Rabbi Matondo, Danilo, Abdallah Sima and co all battling for a place in the attacking positions. 

And Negri, scorer of 32 league goals in just 30 games for the Glasgow giants, thinks the under-fire manager needs to settle on his preferred line-up as he searches for consistency on and off the pitch.

“Right now, I think Michael Beale is still trying to find the best line-up. Especially up front,” Negri adds. “But time is already ticking away, and he must find a hierarchy of players.

“It’s so important for attacking players that they know each other and how they fit. You need chemistry in these positions. Right now, Rangers are still looking for the right formula.”
