Mass bettors can parlay Celtics and Bruins to win championships at +1475

It’s a perfect storm for Boston sports and Massachusetts sports bettors. The Boston Celtics are the +350 second favorite to win the NBA title. The Boston Bruins are the +300 chalk to win the Stanley Cup. And this year, thanks to the legalization of sports betting in Massachusetts, not only can you bet on both Boston teams to win titles, you can package them together in a parlay.

DraftKings Sportsbook is offering +1200 odds on combined Bruins-Celtics title wins. The betting line is even sweeter at BetMGM. That book is offering +1475 odds on Boston producing the NBA and NHL champions this season.

After riding high atop the NBS standings for much of the season, a 5-6 skid has seen the Celtics slip to third overall in the East. Should it be cause for concern, or this just the ebbs and flows of a long season?

In Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the Celtics suit up two elite scorers. A veteran squad, Boston went to the NBA Finals last season, so the long, arduous playoff trek is well familiar to them.

Boston has struggled with closing out games, displaying issues with rebounding and turnovers. And injuries have proven to be an ongoing problem throughout the season.

With a 53-11-5 slate, the Bruins are going to win the Presidents’ Trophy, which goes to the NHL team with the best regular-season record. In fact, the Bruins are on pace to shatter the league record for wins in a season of 62, set by the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings and equaled by the 2018-19 Tampa Bay Lightning.

That may not be good news, though. Neither of those record-setting teams won the Stanley Cup. As a matter of fact, they both failed to reach the Stanley Cup final.

There is a strong belief in hockey circles in the Presidents’ Trophy curse and it is not a conspiracy theory without merit. None of the last nine Presidents’ Trophy winners have gone on to win the Stanley Cup. All-time, just eight of 36 Presidents’ Trophy winners were also Stanley Cup winners.

Twice previously, the Bruins iced record-setting teams that failed to win championships. In 1970-71 Boston set NHL records for wins (57) and points (121). Phil Esposito (76-76-152) shattered league standards for goals and points, while Bobby Orr (102) set a new NHL mark for assists. And Boston lost to the Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the playoffs.

Four decades earlier in 1929-30, Boston was an NHL-best 38-5-1. The .875 winning percentage of the Bruins remains the NHL single-season mark. Cooney Weiland set an NHL record with 73 points. Boston didn’t lose back-to-back games all season long until the Bruins were swept by the Canadiens in a best-of-three Stanley Cup final series.

While the NHL playoffs can be random in nature, in the NBA the cream tends to rise to the top. Each of the lsat 27 NBA champions were no worse than a No. 3 seed during regular-season play. Fifteen of those winners were top-seeded teams.

In each of the last six NBA title-winning seasons in Boston, the Celtics entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed.

All of the mitigating factors - history, analytics and common sense - say absolutely not.

For starters, it’s never happened before, so there’s that. Since the first NBA season was contested in 1946-47, there’s never been a season in which both the NHL and NBA champions were from the same city.

Boston came close. In 1968-69, the Celtics won their 10th NBA title in 11 years. In 1969-70, the Bruins were Stanley Cup champions for the first time since 1940-41.

Still, sports are about fun and entertainment. Don’t bet the house or the farm on it, but for a small stipend - $5 or $10 - why not add a little excitement to your spring by playing a Celtics-Bruins title parlay?
