Melbourne Cup: Beirne family whose livelihoods have depended on racing for three generations

David Beirne is the new employee of Tabcorp, who is responsible for setting the betting odds for the Melbourne Cup. He is part of a bookmaker dynasty that goes back three generations. His grandfather Keith was a small-time bookie, his father Dominic was one of the most prominent bookies of 1980s, and his son Shaun was head of TAB's bookmaking operations in 2005-07. David took over Shaun's job in March 2018. He doesn't watch sport much because he cheers for draws in soccer and unpopular racing choices. The Melbourne cup starts on Tuesday.
