Melbourne Cup contender ruled out of the Spring

The dream of competing in this year’s Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) has been shattered for the connections of the reigning New Zealand Horse of the Year, Sharp ‘N’ Smart.

After an uncharacteristically lacklustre performance at the Group 1 Arrowfield Stud Plate (1600m) at Hastings, a subsequent veterinary examination revealed a troubling viral infection, sidelining the horse for the foreseeable spring races.

“He has got a viral blood disorder.” said Graeme Rogerson, who trains the gelding alongside Debbie Rogerson.

Providing clarity on the recent performance, Rogerson remarked, “His work was enormous last Tuesday… but he was fully vetted yesterday which revealed a viral infection.”

Highlighting their concern, he added, “The horse comes first and all the owners are right behind us.”

Due to this setback, Sharp ‘N’ Smart will also miss out on the Group 1 Livamol Classic (2040m) and Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).
