Michael van Gerwen returns to the Ally Pally this December as the PDC World Darts Championship betting favourite once more, as the Dutchman seeks to peak over the festive period.

UK bookmakers that threw Van Gerwen in as the second favourite before the tournament started last year have had a rethink for the 2023 World Darts Championship and have opted to reinstall Van Gerwen as the man to beat.

It’s a position the Dutchman is used to being in as he prepares for the 16th World Championship of his career.

Van Gerwen has won the title three times – in 2014, 2017 and 2019 – but darts betting fans can never quite rely on him to do the business.

Last year the second favourite crashed out in the third round after withdrawing before his match with Chris Dobey.

Van Gerwen had tested positive for Covid-19 and under tournament rules was forced to cede the match.

In 2016 he also fell in the third round via a 4-3 loss to compatriot Raymond van Barneveld.

Still, Van Gerwen won’t be too worried of an early exit this year following his recent triumphs at the 2022 Players Championship Finals.

Now all the focus is on the Worlds, and Van Gerwen is the big favourite to claim a fourth title here.

Latest Van Gerwen Odds

Betting sites were fast to install Van Gerwen as the 2023 World Darts Championship betting favourite at 3/1, and that price has now moved in further to 5/2

That suggests a 28.6% likelihood that Van Gerwen will win the title this winter, which is better than his odds last year.

However, it also reflects a big comedown from previous short odds in recent years. Back in 2020 Van Gerwen was priced as low as 5/4 to win the World Championship, odds that carried an implied probability of 44%.

We’re unlikely to see that now, thanks in large part to the rise in genuine challengers to Van Gerwen’s crown.

Gerwyn Price, James Wade and Michael Smith have all won tournaments in November and look on form with the Worlds underway.

Van Gerwen’s Pre-Tournament Odds Down The Years

2019: 11/8 – 42% chance of winning

2020: 5/4 – 44% chance of winning

2021: 9/4 – 31% chance of winning

2022: 9/2 – 18% chance of winning

2023: 5/2 – 28.6% chance of winning

Last year was a low mark for Van Gerwen in terms of his darts odds, but it wasn’t unexpected.

Covid-19 was still raging and the fact players who contracted the disease would need to withdraw from the Worlds meant that outcome was factored into the betting odds – and, indeed, he withdrew before the third round.

This year is different though. Players are vaccinated and have likely contracted the virus by now, so are less likely to contract it again at the Ally Pally.

In fact, it’s not only Van Gerwen’s odds that have responded compared to last year.

On the whole, most of the top players have better odds this year than in 2022.

The only big change is Price, who was top dog last year but now finds himself as the 6/1 third favourite with betting apps, behind the Dutchman.

Van Gerwen’s season, meanwhile, has been a successful one. He won the World Matchplay and World Grand Prix, on top of his Players Championship triumph, and also claimed the Premier League Darts trophy for a sixth time.

On top of this he’s enjoyed playing on the road, reaching the US Darts Masters final, and winning the Queensland Darts Masters with an 8-5 victory over Price.

Van Gerwen also tops the stats for tournament average (99.08) in 2022, and is tied with Jonny Clayton on 67% for bettering his opponent’s average in a match.

He is second top for the most 180s thrown this year (82) and averages 0.77 +100 checkouts per match – more than anyone else.

In late November Van Gerwen nailed a nine-dart finish en route to victory in the Players Championship Finals.

“I'm here to win tournaments,” the Dutchman said. “I love winning, I love performing on the stage and to produce something extra, something special in a final like this, gives me a lot of energy.”

Latest World Darts Championship Betting Odds

Van Gerwen comes into the Worlds in top form but is by no means the runaway favourite to win this title. Price, for a start, remains the World No.1 despite him winning just one premier tournament all year.

He is joined by Peter Wright, Michael Smith and Luke Humphries in the running for the 2023 World Darts Championship.

Price is now 6/1 with darts betting sites having previously been 4/1 back in August.

The shift is a result of Van Gerwen’s surge in form over the past few weeks. Likewise, Wright’s odds have floated out to 9/1 as more and more punters pile in on Van Gerwen.

Smith, however, has seen positive movement the other way with his odds coming in from 10/1 to 5/1

Smith won the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton in mid-November, beating Nathan Aspinall in the final, after seeing off Van Barneveld and Joe Cullen in the earlier rounds.

Josh Rock has burst on the scene this year and the 21-year-old has already bagged his first senior title which he followed up with a recent Youth Championship victory

Rock achieved his first televised 9-dart finish in the Grand Slam Of Darts in a 10-8 defeat to MVG in November and after being available at 100/1 to win the Worlds at the start of the year, Rock is now as short as 14/1 in places.

Another Smith – Ross – secured the highest average at the Grand Slam with 107.92 and that helped his odds improve from 100/1 to 66/1, but he remains one of the big outsiders to win here.

Indeed, other notable outsiders include 2015 and 2016 champion Gary Anderson (50/1), 2018 winner Rob Cross (33/1), and this year’s World Matchplay semi-finalist Dimitri Van den Bergh (25/1).
